happy new year!

I’m hoping you are on holiday somewhere fabulous as you are reading this. So here we are saying goodbye to 2017 and hello to 2018. I have to say the last few months of 2017 have been an emotional rollercoaster with Australia voting yes to gay marriage (at the time of writing, the bill to legalise same-sex marriage has passed the Senate, but is yet to be voted on by the House of Representatives). Just this morning I received a save-the-date from my cousin Michael and his partner, Kieran, who plan to wed in Canberra on April 7, but there is an asterisk on the e-vite: *Subject to legislative approval. Crazy, right? The joy and excitement my two daughters expressed when they heard about the impending nuptials said it all…

Kristen Ingersoll Hearst Magazines International’s fashion and entertainment director styled iconic model Carolyn Murphy in a series of uptown and downtown New York-inspired looks for this month’s BAZAAR cover. “The first thing I remember about Carolyn’s modelling career is her work for Estée Lauder,” Ingersoll says. “Her beauty campaigns have always made a statement: classic elegance, reminding me of Grace Kelly. I also loved her December 1999 cover with US Harper’s BAZAAR.” See the full story, “American Beauty”, on page 84. Murphy’s career has been so enduring because ... “of her dedication, natural beauty and her very positive outlook on life. She really enjoys talking with people and discovering what they have to say. These are great qualities to have when you are working with others.” My New Year’s resolution is ... “pretty…

VISION QUEST It’s with interest reading my wife’s December BAZAAR that I came across Sarah-Jane Clarke’s interview re her alcohol-free year [“Dry Season”]. As a 55-year-old man in a similar industry, I have decided to “endeavour” to go down the same track. As was Sarah-Jane, I was the life of the party and believed the gig would not work without me being last to leave; dinner parties at home, thinking the following morning, What did I eat last night? It’s been a long time since I could or would write an email at 6am on a Sunday morning. I speak with colleagues who say they stopped drinking and it didn’t make much difference in their lives. But I beg to differ. After three months in, you see your business and…

cover star carolyn murphy

Whether shes on the red carpet or off duty, Murphy’s style swings from classic American to classic feminine. Her friend Michael Kors is on the Estée Lauder spokesmodel’s go-to designers list, as is Raf Simons for Calvin Klein. Her denim game is also solid (think Re/Done and The Line x Goldsign). When she’s not in cropped jeans or a sleek jumpsuit, it’s all about the soft option, such as an off-the-shoulder floral markarian dress or an embroidered linen frock from Vita Kin. COVER LOOK Photographed by Nino Muñoz. Styled by Kristen Ingersoll and Fran Marto. Carolyn Murphy wears Chanel dress and earrings, both price on application. See Buylines for stockists. wish list

My style is quite minimal — UNCOMPLICATED, classic and with a MODERN twist [14]. I love Phoebe Philo for CÉLINE for tailored pieces. I also love Joseph [3] for the same aesthetic and more AFFORDABILITY. I don’t wear much jewellery ... unless I have an event on, when I’ll go for STATEMENT earrings [4]. I love LOEWE’s basket bag [11] and Céline’s net shoe with a KITTEN HEEL [1]. I can’t wait for the Ryan Storer x Albus Lumen shell jewellery collection [12] . On my resort 2018 wish list are sandals from THE ROW [7], Céline sunglasses [13] ... and a LONG HOLIDAY [10]. I love a CLASSIC white shirt from Acne [2]. I like to layer my tailoring with a bodysuit or simply a ONE-PIECE swimsuit [5]. My…
