So how does the Harper’s BAZAAR fashion team end up at Australia Zoo with suitcases full of the most amazing spring/summer collections, a supermodel in the making — Shanina Shaik — and a gorgeous koala named Chip on a hot and humid Queensland day? For this issue I wanted to celebrate the Australian fashion industry and everything we at BAZAAR love about it. Our innovation, our isolation, our beauty (and beauties), our uniqueness and the fact we are thousands of kilometres from the world’s official fashion capitals but can, and do, hold our own on the world stage. As I write this, Dion Lee and Zimmermann are presenting their A/W 15–16 collections at New York fashion week and sass & bide is preparing to show its first collection by new…

OLIVIA DEGN They say never work with children or animals, but Australia Zoo’s roving zookeeper reports model Shanina Shaik was a natural with her fellow cover star, 15-month-old Chip the koala. “She was so relaxed with Shanina and loved snuggling into her for a cuddle,” says Degn. See Shaik work her magic with other inhabitants of the zoo, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, on page 126. The best thing about working at Australia Zoo is … “every day is different. I am so lucky to work with a diverse range of animals. ” My favourite Australian animal is … “the dingo. When I first started at Australia Zoo, we received two eight-week-old dingo puppies and as they were getting accustomed to zoo life, so was I. They are so intelligent, with such unique personalities.…

letter of the month

WELL-SPENT YOUTH I write to convey my pleasure at reading the article “Care Factor Zero” (BAZAAR March). I too was a child in the (late!) 1970s, and I remember the days being just as the writer described — free and easy, riding our bikes around with the only stipulation being to be home before dark — and all this without the security of mobile phones (heavens!). What I fail to understand is why Gen X parents have not raised their own children in this same wonderful spirit that we enjoyed. As the article points out, the crime rates today are not that much worse than they’ve ever been, yet there seems to be such a culture of fear and distrust. It is prudent to raise clever and socially aware children, but…

shanina shaik (& chip)

Here’s the deal with Chip the koala: you go to her, she doesn’t go to you. So the BAZAAR crew and the ever-obliging Shanina Shaik flew out to the Sunshine Coast’s Australia Zoo to shoot the April cover star for the few fleeting hours she was actually awake (so ’90s supermodel). And with that fierce smize, soft grey fur and those perfectly manicured nails, she was only ever going to create a magic moment. ON THE COVER Photographed by Simon Upton. Styled by Naomi Smith. Shanina Shaik wears Gucci dress, $5020. Price approximate. Hair by Michele McQuillan at M. A. P; makeup by Victoria Baron at M. A. P. Photographed at Australia Zoo, Queensland. Recreate Shaik’s makeup look with Elizabeth Arden. On face: Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin 24HR Makeup; on cheeks: Pure Finish…
