fashion revolution

“People Like Us”, page 158. (GEORGES ANTONI)As editor of Harper’s BAZAAR, a large part of my job is to embrace change, as the world of fashion is in a state of continuous transformation. Or in 2016 speak: constant disruption. And if you don’t embrace the new, you absolutely run the risk of becoming obsolete. But, as with fashion itself, you do at times question what is going to stick for longer than a season. Champion of change and Burberry CEO Christopher Bailey announced earlier this year that the British fashion house has re-thought the fashion calendar and will now combine its men’s and women’s shows into two annual runway shows of seasonless collections available to buy immediately. No more waiting six months for a collection to hit boutiques. Immediately,…

“Come Together”, shot by Jake Terrey, page 146. JAKE TERREYIt’s safe to say the photographer, who’s been hired by everyone from Ellery to Country Road and who captured the best looks from the Australian designer A/W 2016 collections for BAZAAR on page 146, takes his work very seriously. Yet ask him what originally drew him to his profession and Terrey’s response is firmly tongue-in-cheek. “I just wanted to get more likes on Insta and Facey so I could get stuff from brands and go to free lunches. ” We may never get the real answer to this question, but we do know he has a sense of humour. My favourite Australian model to work with is … “anyone who is pleasant to be around and who doesn’t take it, or…

letter of the month

Lily Collins in the March issue. LOVELY LILYWINNER of this month’s best-letter prize, a Najo necklace valued at more than $690. I love Lily Collins [“The Life of Lily”, BAZAAR March]. She is so elegant and a true individual. Yes, she’s beautiful and can boast having a pop-star dad in Phil Collins, but she also seems refreshingly down to earth. It’s always great when someone who has star appeal doesn’t have an ego-obsessed outlook on life. Collins is no bimbo, either. In this era of celebrity, it’s wonderful to see that here’s an intelligent, articulate young woman who is willing to learn from others. She has done some modelling and acting, which may sound a little predictable, but Collins is one of those people you believe in. Great cover. Great…

cover star natalie portman

Could Dior and Natalie Portman be a match made in fashion heaven? After all, they’re both sophisticated, daring and ever so slightly enigmatic in their approaches. The Miss Dior ambassador certainly wears the label well … and often. Although the actor does occasionally deviate with lashings of Lanvin here or a delicately bohemian Valentino look there. A pretty perfect wardrobe, really. ON THE COVERPhotographed by Alique. Styled by Kate Young. Natalie Portman wears Christian Dior knit, $2000. Makeup by Dior. Recreate Portman’s look with Dior. On face: Diorskin Forever Fluid Foundation SPF 25 in Medium Beige; Diorskin Forever & Ever Invisible Loose Powder; on cheeks: Diorblush Sculpt in Coral Shape; on brows: Diorshow Brow Styler Gel in Brown; on eyes: Eye Palette 5 Couleurs Designer in Amber Design; Diorshow Mascara…

wish list

I like to have a classic core to my wardrobe, but then I like to play with unexpected elements, whether it’s a COLOUR [2], a cut or a great piece of JEWELLERY [12]. Tailored jackets, such as a SAINT LAURENT BLAZER [5], are timeless. I’d love this dress from ALEXANDER MCQUEEN [1] — it’s so otherworldly. In the studio, I’m in SNEAKERS [7], a T-SHIRT [15] and JEANS [4]. I have my eye on these ACNE SHOES [10]. The Row always do a BEAUTIFUL BLOUSE [13]. This CÉLINE BAG [9] is perfect. When designing a collection, I always think about what I would love to wear. I like pieces that are bold yet delicate, such as these BANGLES [14]. Beauty for me is so much about what happens in our…
