editor’s letter

WHILE preparing to send this issue to print, Chanel announced the sad news that Karl Lagerfeld, their creative director, had died at the age of 85 in Paris. His passing brought one of the longest fashion journeys, one that began more than half a century ago, to an end. By the time you read this, much will have been discussed and written about this colossus of the fashion world: from his creative spirit, vision and genius, to his formidable humour and friendships. Aside from Lagerfeld’s extraordinary talent and encyclopedic knowledge of literature and art, this mastermind was also a showman: an endlessly quotable straight talker with a wicked wit. His daring and irreverent approach, coupled with a formidable work ethic, saw him design collections not only for Chanel (for 37 years), but…

Sabah Having watched her ascent to international success, BAZAAR seized the opportunity for the Sudanese-Australian model to be photographed by Darren McDonald. Powerful beige was the theme of the shoot (page 84), which was perfectly suited to Sabah’s personal style. “I’m more into the minimal, as less is more,” she says. “Just because it’s not colourful or wild doesn’t mean it’s not appealing.” Watch behind-the-scenes moments from this fashion story online at harpersbazaar.com.au. Best prep for a shoot… “I exfoliate, foam wash and deeply moisturise my face so my skin is smooth and clear before arriving on set.” On identity and diversity… “I was born in Sudan and I still speak my native tongue fluently. I’m happy to finally see a strong shift towards diversity within the Australian fashion industry.” Caro Llewellyn Sydney…

UNDENIABLY SEXY, model Ashley Graham’s style is a celebration of glamour with a capital G. Lace detailing, waist-cinching silhouettes and sheer eveningwear are regulars in her wheelhouse, with her favoured designers including Christian Siriano, Michael Kors and our own Maticevski. Beauty-wise, she favours fresh-looking skin, mixing Revlon’s PhotoReady foundation (she wears shades 260 and 270 at once) with Weleda Skin Food for a fresh, dewy feel. Graham is partial to a red lip, her favourite being the Never Enough Lip Worship cherry-red lip kit she designed in collaboration with Revlon in 2018. Her mantra is ‘always put-together’. “My mom was always dressed to the nines, darling. She always had her hair and makeup on and was very well-dressed. She taught me to do the same.” GET ASHLEY’S BEAUTY LOOK with Revlon.…

MY STYLE MY LOOK has always been pretty minimalistic, but with an edge. It’s eclectic; I don’t like to stick to one particular era or style as I get bored. I always appreciate femininity, simplicity, sophistication, a cool twist and a bit of glamour. Miuccia Prada is my favourite designer. She always manages to reinvent herself, and her creations will go down in fashion history. I am very excited about Daniel Lee at Bottega , Vauthier, who is one of my best friends and collaborators, and the creator of the most glamorous dresses and tailored suits. I like Glenn Martens at Y/Project. I love my girls from Attico. I LOVE JEWELLERY, Buccellati and Cartier are my favourites because they are timeless, sophisticated and iconic. I also love Repossi. The Hermès Mini…

karl lagerfeld 1933–2019

KARL IS DEAD’. The shock of the stark headlines that announced Karl Lagerfeld’s passing on the morning of February 19 were like a bludgeon to the head. He had died in Paris at the age of 85, serving to prove his mortality, which some of fashion’s more mischievous gossips had started to question. “I don’t care what happens when I have gone,” he once told me in an interview, acutely aware of the vacuum that would be left with his death. “I am only interested in my work.” Lagerfeld was fashion’s most prolific — and arguably most powerful — designer, creating 10 collections per year for Chanel, as well as Fendi’s womenswear and the ranges for his eponymous line. He was a brilliant illustrator with a hand capable of drafting distinctive…
