Lara Worthington with baby Rocket, photographed by Russell James, page 126. (GEORGES ANTONI. KELLIE HUSH WEARS LOUIS VUITTON DRESS)Those are the wise words of Coco Chanel, a pioneering modern woman who pushed social, political and fashion boundaries every day of her incredible life. Those words are also the perfect introduction to our Freedom Issue. Freedom: don’t we all want it? For many it is just a holiday without the phone buzzing. For others it is bigger than an electronic detox and can be a life-changing decision. As I get older and wiser, I would have to say my definition of freedom today is in line with Coco’s. In our youth we spend so much unnecessary time worrying about what other people think — I’ve been absolutely guilty of this…

Lara Worthington, photographed by Russell James, page 126. RUSSELL JAMESNot only did the longtime Victoria’s Secret photographer and Nomad Two Worlds founder shoot our cover and inside story, he also provided the location: his Woodstock property and its surrounds — the perfect backdrop for our Freedom Issue cover. “I love the lack of pretension here. And the hippies!” he says. “Many of my neighbours haven’t realised the Woodstock ’69 concert has finished — that’s why I stay. I also felt Woodstock was the perfect place to shoot Lara because it reminds me the most about ‘home’ in Australia. It’s maybe the vibe 20 years ago if Byron Bay and Margaret River had a baby, except the backdrop is mountains, not ocean. ”The people who inspire me are … “Australians like…

letter of the month

PLAY MISTY FOR MEJust wanted to drop you a line to say it’s great to see musicians like Father John Misty [“Wedding Album”, BAZAAR October] represented in your magazine — loved it! And downloaded the album immediately. Thanks for the hot tip! TANYA, QUEENSLANDHART AND SOULA Body Issue [BAZAAR October] is always an interesting read in a fashion magazine. BAZAAR has surely reinforced its reputation with the likes of Jessica Hart (a beauteous being!) on the cover. Clare Maclean’s playful approach to the interview was amusing. To me, as a “yoga once a week” person, Jess’s childhood had me reflecting on my own — in particular, on guidelines from my mother. It’s inspiring to see how far Jess has come. [Photographer] Steven Chee captured quite a beautiful moment for Jess.…

Despite the fact that Lara Worthington is now just as likely to be found in New York or LA as she is in Sydney, her home town still defines her sense of style. There’s always a sense of ease about her look, but a nonchalant sophistication as well, whether it be a soft pastel trench, a black slip and sandals or a classic black winter coat paired with Chuck Taylor All Stars. Of course, her most defining feature remains her much-copied bob, which happens to suit her current beach-to-big-city lifestyle to a T. ON THE COVERPhotographed by Russell James. Styled by Karla Clarke. Lara Worthington wears Victoria Beckham dress, $6123. Hair by Travis Balcke at Company 1 for Wella ;makeupbyVicky Bryan Bantry. See Buylines for details and stockists. B BY BALENCIAGA (1) fragrance isn’t too sweet, it’s fresh and powdery, and I am obsessed. My style is monochromatic, boyish and undone. I wear my Georgia Alice MAN SHIRT (2) soooo much. A white shirt cannot be beat — so easy, so crisp. I love BLAZERS (3); something with a tidy shoulder pad. I’m coveting CAROLINA BUCCI JEWELLERY (4). This is super fine and has tiny little green garnet stones — minimal but so special. The only colours I wear are shades of DENIM (5, 7, 10, 12). The rest is pretty much grey, black, white and cream. Shoes are my weakness. I like Balenciaga’s D’ORSAY PUMPS (11) in khaki sequins. That colour is normally a no-no, but these are perfect. And a crisp new pair of adidas STAN…
