editor’s letter

None of us is guaranteed immunity from life’s ups and downs. So it seems fitting that now, in the midst of spring, our November issue serves as a reminder to cherish new beginnings. Perhaps no one knows that better than journalist Leigh Sales, who on page 44 (“When Tomorrow Comes”) reveals what she’s learnt from both reporting on and coping with life’s unexpected blows. Fronting the ABC’s 7.30 for seven years has meant dealing with people who have had to face the unimaginable, from domestic violence to murder, terminal illness and terrorism. Expecting to find shattered lives, she actually discovered that people aren’t the sum of the terrible things that may have happened to them. In fact, she writes, we’re all a lot more resilient than we think. Another incredible young…

ABBY CHAMPION Manners still matter for a modern belle in America’s south. “Growing up in Alabama taught me a lot about manners and family,” the model says. “I learnt to have good values and enjoy what I have and the opportunities I’ve been given.” Good manners have served the 21-year-old well during her career walking for the likes of Chanel, Miu Miu and Balmain, posing for Victoria’s Secret and, recently, shooting for BAZAAR in Croatia (“Go with the Flow”, page 88), where she chatted happily with the crew between shots, waxing lyrical about her grandmother’s fried chicken. “It is hands down the best thing ever,” she insists. Shooting in Croatia involved an early start: “We got up at 3.30am and shot for about five hours, and then at lunchtime it rained…

phoebe tonkin

When it comes to her personal style, Phoebe Tonkin is a shape-shifter. For professional appearances, red carpets and runway shows, she’s always immaculately groomed and styled in glamorous dresses and high heels. But off-duty, while she’s hanging with friends in Los Angeles and taking road trips across California, you’ll find her makeup-free in denim cutoffs and an easy white shirt or a cotton T-shirt. With a schedule that requires a lot of international travel, Tonkin has the easy-pack down to an art: “I try to pack a lot of linen, cotton and denim so I don’t have to find an iron or steamer,” she says. “Anything that can be rolled up, scrunched up and thrown on.” THE LOOK Photographed by ÉRIC GUILLEMAIN. Styled by NAOMI SMITH. Phoebe Tonkin wears Chanel top, $37,315,…

wish list

My STYLE is shaped by my TRAVEL schedule. I’m always on the go, so my wardrobe is based around SUITCASE-FRIENDLY capsule COLLECTIONS and my favourites from the current season. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE our new CARLISLE BAY Collection [4, 12]. Most of my wardrobe is in neutrals [8, 9], but for EVENING I love strong colours and DRAMATIC silhouettes. I like the freshness and FEMININITY of Rodarte [1, 2], as well as BOLD jewellery, especially GOLD. My husband gave me one of Buccellati’s EXTRAORDINARY cuffs [3]; it’s a ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME piece. And I think Sabine Getty is a FABULOUS designer [13]. My bags go through a lot. The LOEWE HAMMOCK [11] is perfect for rushing through airports. For the ultimate wish list INDULGENCE, it would have to be the HERMÈS Kelly picnic…

when tomorrow comes

EVERY NIGHT, when I anchor the ABC’s current affairs program 7.30, it’s likely that at least one person on the show will be sharing the story of the worst day of their life. Disasters, accidents, unexpected tragedies — these things are the mainstays of the news. Reporting them has been my job for 25 years, and the effect of it has been to make me somewhat anxious: When will it be my turn? Why would this happen to them and not to me? Why wasn’t I the person in the Lindt cafe on the day of a terrorist attack or on a ride at Dreamworld the day it malfunctioned? In 2014, a series of events began to unfold in my personal life that made me even more fearful that my number was…
