last year at this time i was wrecked…

My father, whom I adored, was slowly dying of heart failure in Boston, four hours away. All I could think about was being at his side. And no matter where I was, I was profoundly sad. At some point during this crisis, my friend Carey insisted I join her at SoulCycle. I’m more of a slow-jog-in-the-park type of exerciser, so the idea of fast-paced cycling didn’t appeal. But Carey didn’t care. She signed me up for a session with her favorite teacher, Noa, and set me up on a bike next to hers. The studio, I was surprised to find, was dark, lit mostly by candles. Noa is not what you imagine when you think of a SoulCycle instructor. He is 54 and covered in tats. He plays great rock and soul…

My go-to breakfast: Imake chia pudding by mixing 1 cup unsweetened almond milk with 4 tablespoons chia seeds, 1 teaspoon matcha powder, and a drizzle of maple syrup. I then let it sit in the fridge overnight. My perfect Saturday: Sleeping in, reading a good book, cooking a tasty brunch, then running in Central Park. And it would end with dancing with my friends! The one item I always have in my gym bag: Extra hair elastics, because they always break at the worst possible time. To me, strength means: Self-confidence, self-worth, and self-love.…

bike with your besties!

Turns out, all those spin and barre sessions are doing more for you than just torching calories. New research in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association finds that they also do wonders for your mental health. In the small study, the people who worked out in a group exercise setting at least once a week for 12 weeks felt 26 percent less stressed, while the ones who exercised by themselves didn’t experience any notable difference in their stress levels. Now you have a solid excuse to splurge on a pack of your favorite classes.…

3 inexpensive ways to feel happier now

Open a book: Hit the public library or pull out a classic from your own bookshelf that you could read again and again, and get cozy on the couch. Reading about fictional characters who are facing similar issues as you may better your ability to reflect on your own problems, research has shown. Start a gratitude habit: Once a week, write down three to five things you’re grateful for and try to get specific about how they affect your life in a positive way. Studies show that putting thankful thoughts into writing increases the emotional impact, compared with just thinking about them. Schedule free fun: Instead of planning social gatherings around restaurants or bars (which may add money stress), take turns with your friends coming up with an inexpensive activity to do…
