from the editor: in the moment

The other day while on a walk with my 18-year-old son, I told him about a story we have in this issue, “Back to Nature” (page 84). In it, we explain how spending time outdoors can boost your mood, reduce stress, and improve your well-being. He and I weren’t far from home—we had just walked a few blocks in our suburban town—but that’s enough. I pointed out our neighbor’s peony plants getting ready to bloom. We heard a woodpecker and tried to follow the sound to find it. We watched a squirrel do a high-wire act on tree branches above our heads. I breathed it all in—the spring air, and this time with my son (who, to be honest, was humoring me—but still!). That’s the point of the article: to find…

WHICH BREW IS BETTER FOR YOU? Good news—coffee and tea both have plenty of benefits. We asked our contributing nutrition editor, Cynthia Sass, to take a closer look at the two popular sips. Coffee Vs. Tea PROS There is an inverse relationship between coffee consumption and overall death rate, according to a 2018 scientific review published in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases. Regular coffee intake is tied to a reduced risk of heart disease and cardiovascular outcomes, including congestive heart failure and stroke, as well as type 2 diabetes and depression. It’s also protective against some neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. (Researchers caution, however, that most of the data available is based on observation studies rather than the more reliable randomized controlled trials.) CONS The main downside of coffee is caffeine content, which…

confessions of a former sun worshipper

Growing up in Pennsylvania, where the winters are long, my siblings and I were taught that when the sun was out, you should soak it in. I have the best parents in the world, but the only time I ever remember my mom or dad slathering us kids in sunscreen was at vacations on the beach. And when I became a teenager, I opted for tanning oil instead, seeking that prized golden glow. For prom, I hit the tanning bed. In my 20s, when I was the beauty assistant at Cosmopolitan, I remember returning from a beach vacation bronzed to a crisp, walking around the office feeling cute…until I read a post that a fellow staffer wrote about me on the magazine’s website, mocking my tan and how unhealthy it…

ingredient spotlight: niacinamide

What Is It? An active form of B3, niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin that’s found in foods like red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and green vegetables. The body uses it to turn food into energy, and it helps keep your digestive system, nervous system, and skin healthy. What Does It Do? Studies suggest that the vitamin may play a part in preventing skin cancer, says Anna Guanche, MD, a dermatologist in Calabasas, California. A 2015 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that when taken orally, nicotinamide (another name for niacinamide) has been shown to have protective effects against UV radiation and to reduce the rate of new premalignant actinic keratoses (the most common skin precancer). When used topically, niacinamide can act as a brightener, and is often recommended by…
