it's time to be good to yourself

This holiday season, why not give yourself something special: the gift of self-kindess. All too often, we beat ourselves up for not being good enough. You know the thoughts: "I should have made it to the gym." "I should have been more patient with my kids." "I can't believe I'm doing my holiday shopping at the last minute again." Perfectionism is often what drives this kind of guilt, according to the pros we talked to for "Let Go of Guilt" (page 26). We want to do it all (work, motherhood, marriage, self-improvement) flawlessly all the time. But the problem with creating such exacting standards for ourselves is that nobody could possibly live up to them. As a result, we set ourselves up for disappointment, as well as stress and anxiety. Ready to…

chill out to burn fat

Reason to get outdoors now: Being cold and shivering for 15 minutes can have a similar effect on the body as an hour of moderate exercise. A study in Cell Metabolism found that folks placed under cooling blankets experienced a rise in the hormone irisin, which can turn white fat cells (our main form of fat) into the calorie-torching brown kind. Shivering, like exercise, involves muscle contraction, triggering the release of irisin, explains lead study author Paul Lee, PhD, an endocrinologist at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney. Brrrilliant Idea Take your workout into the cold! Those first frigid minutes before your body warms up may help you melt away fat, just like the last sweaty mile.…

Sad but true: The area most likely to give away your age is your décolletage. "It gets a ton of sun exposure and shows age spots, broken capillaries and wrinkles first," explains Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, a dermatologist in Washington, D.C. Making matters worse, we often overlook that area when applying sunscreen and other skin products. Fortunately, it's not too late to fight back. "Treat the neck and chest the same as your face," stresses celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas, founder of an eponymous skin care line. This means extending your application of all face products down your neck and over your chest. Need a quicker fix? Try one of these treatments to minimize wrinkles and visible damage temporarily. your new libido booster

Forget aphrodisiacs—the secret to a better sex life could be as basic as showing a little consideration. People (especially women) who viewed their partners as being responsive—understanding and appreciative of their needs—had greater sexual desire for their mates, found a study in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. "On a practical level, one thing partners can do is simply pay attention to what the other is saying," explains lead study author Gurit Birnbaum, a social psychologist at the Interdisciplinary Center in Israel. "Listen with an open mind—really listen, without interrupting or prejudging." Bottom line: If you want to turn each other on, stay tuned in. COUPLE, MARGA FRONTERA/GETTY IMAGES…

finally, flat abs!

There's no getting around it: We are gaga over Lady Gaga's abs. And, apparently, so is the 30-year-old American Horror Story star, considering she likes to show off that svelte stomach every chance she gets. What keeps Gaga looking great? Russian twists, says Harley Pasternak, who's trained her. "This move really hits those corset muscles that pull in the abs," he explains. Sit with knees bent, palms together and arms extended straight out. Lean back slightly and lift feet off the floor (A). Pull navel to spine and twist slowly to the right (B). Return to center, then twist slowly to the left (C). Do 3 or 4 sets of 20 to 30 reps. (Make it harder: Hold a 5- to 10-pound medicine ball.)…
