What an incredible month it has been! Words like self-isolation, quarantine and home schooling have become the norm, and most of us have spent more time at home than ever before. Has anyone else been baking loaf after loaf of banana bread? No, just me? The silver lining to come from this uncertain time is that many of us seem to have slowed down a little, returning to a simpler way of living. The Australian newspaper reported that online interest in cooking reached a five-year peak. Classics like gnocchi, beef bourguignon, apricot chicken and scones were some of the most-searched recipes. And, it seems, we’re turning to heathier ingredients too, with fresh vegie sales increasing 15 per cent in just four weeks. Carrots, potatoes and onions were the most popular. This month we’ve…

Elly Bransgrove, NT Cut the fat Thank you for the very clear and concise feature ‘Full fat vs low fat’ (March, 2020). Does touch change taste? The touch-sensation from the sleeve on your coffee cup could be affecting your perception of the brew’s taste. Coffee drinkers sipping out of cups with 12 different sleeves found cardboard gave stronger bitter flavours, towel sleeves seemed to deliver sweeter and creamier tastes, and linen sleeves offered stronger salty sensations. Food Quality & Preference, 2020 PORTION PERFECT Take the guesswork out of healthy portions with this handy guide! The whole (grain) truth! Keep your eyes peeled and look for the whole grain when you’re next in the supermarket. keeping kilos off

Winter weight gain is not inevitable! A California university surveyed 5000 members of a weight-loss organisation who lost more than 25kg — and kept it off for more than three years. It investigated 54 weight management behaviours, and reported five key ways to keep weight off. Those who succeeded reported: ● Daily food intake goals ● Recording the food they ate each day ● Measuring foods (think ‘perfect portions’) ● Thinking about their past successes ● Remaining positive in the face of weight regain. And … they found these habits became easier and more ingrained over time! Source: Obesity, 2020. Photo: iStock.…
