I spent the months leading up to the arrival of Whitaker, my new baby boy, as many parents do— nesting. Topping my baby-prep list, however, wasn’t a bassinet or a haul of diapers—though indeed I needed both—but an antique sideboard. Or a Victorian breakfront. A midcentury credenza? What I needed was a big, beautiful storage piece for my dining room. Allow me to explain. Like most New Yorkers, I live in an apartment. And though the rooms are gracious and the natural light ample, the kitchen is a galley. Who cares about cabinet space? I reasoned when we moved in. I certainly don’t need room to store snacks I certainly shouldn’t be eating. There was just enough space for what I consider kitchen essentials, from vintage demitasse spoons to Bundt pans…

lighting for style + function

WHAT THE PROS KNOW Often called the jewelry of the home, lighting adds a beautiful finishing touch to a room, much like a vintage brooch or special piece of jewelry completes the look of an outfit. When considering the options for your next light fixture, let these lighting tips from the product experts at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery lead the way. MAKE A STATEMENT Advancements in LED technology are expanding design capabilities, giving rise to sculptural fixtures that are illuminated pieces of art. While many decorative LED fixtures provide a substantial amount of light, carefully consider the placement of these fixtures in conjunction with other layers of task and ambient lighting to achieve proper illumination within the space. RESPECT THE BULB Make the switch to LED! These cost-saving bulbs are available in a variety…

NCS S 2020-R90B FINE PAINTS OF EUROPE “The billiard room of this 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival home was vast and plain with 14-foot ceilings. It called out for a hue rich in character to counter the size, but not so moody it would read as foreboding. This sensual blue delivered: comforting yet mysterious, with a depth to match the bold cement tiles and Moroccan light fixture.” THOMAS CALLAWAY BEACH GRASS GRAY DONALD KAUFMAN COLOR “This gray is shadowy, with cool violet undertones and a touch of luminosity— the color of a bespoke wool satin suit. I used it for a dramatic formal entry with a black-and-white marble floor and twin half-circle staircases. It accentuates the architecture without stealing the show. A common-area color that’s anything but common!” JEFF ANDREWS DUNE WHITE 968 BENJAMIN MOORE “To me, this…

Ideas to Try & What to Buy 1 The Secretary Desk Centuries before apps, there was the secretaire, a workstation that kept ladies’ correspondence—indeed, entire households—organized. Seersucker. 3 The Bar Cart The original bar cart was mainly functional, invented during Prohibition, when supplies needed to be stashed in a flash. A rubbedgold finish dresses up the airy, elegant lines of this versatile table on wheels. Eliza Drinks…
