In short: a point of view. To me, the most refreshing rooms are the ones in which the owner’s individuality speaks louder than conventional beauty—the homes of people surrounded by their passions. As Gloria Vanderbilt put it: “Decorating is autobiography.” Recently, a caller berated one of our editorial assistants about an “ugly” wallpapered powder room we’d featured. It wasn’t to her taste. CARNIVAL SW 6892 SHERWIN-WILLIAMS “The peachy orange inside a conch shell kick-started the palette of this guest bedroom in Antigua. It’s an intense hue, but you can go strong in the bright sunlight of the West Indies, and it helped perk up what was once a dreary ceiling. I’m a big believer in homes relating to their surroundings, and this Caribbean color can be found just steps away on the beach.” GARY McBOURNIE VERT DE TERRE 234 FARROW & BALL “This calm green is a mashup of my global memories. I like to stay in constant contact with nature, and it’s a combination of the woods, trees, and grasses I’ve encountered growing up in South Africa, living in Australia, visiting Sweden, and residing in the Hamptons. No matter where I am in the world,…

rhymes with smiles

If you could imagine anything and— poof!—have it made, what would you conjure? For New York designer Miles Redd, wizard of colorful glamour and the latest It designer to launch a collection with Ballard Designs, the answer was inside—inside his home. “Most of the pieces are things I’ve collected over the years or adapted that are in my DNA,” he says, noting that he can find something he loves in any decade. “If you borrow from one piece, it’s plagiarism, but if you borrow from a lot, it’s research.” For Ballard, the popular Atlanta-based catalog company that’s now opening brick-and-mortar shops, Redd trotted out 26 favorites: a dining table that riffs on one Babe Paley had in the 1960s (“Bamboo tripods are so chic and witty!”); a decorative urn based…
