from our editor

JUNE 2017 | HOUSE BEAUTIFUL any romp through the House Beautiful archives— and I’ve enjoyed many—inevitably lands me midcentury, in the tenure of Elizabeth Gordon, the renegade editor who taught postwar America how to live. Gordon was a dear friend and ally of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the two shared an ethos that still permeates the pages of this magazine: that a beautiful life begins at home. I can’t help but feel stirred when I read Gordon’s issues, knowing how poignant the idea of home was for “our boys” who had spent years at war overseas. (Today’s stories of immigrants and refugees are similarly heartbreaking—the human desire for a home is universal.) But the postwar era was marked with hope, and Gordon’s magazine offered GIs and their spouses a road map to…

guide to small spaces

PLUS Downplay with 14 nofail colors (or play up!) tiny rooms BILL INGRAM The Atlanta and Birmingham, Alabama, designer had a mini kitchen installed in his living/dining room, transforming it into an all-in-one party haven. SPACE YOURSELF “I divided the long room into thirds— one for living, one for dining, and one for cooking—and installed glossy ceiling beams to compartmentalize each area.” DETAILS, DETAILS “My mounted plate racks are slim yet hold service for 20. The banquette is upholstered in an outdoor fabric, so stains or a splash from the sink can be easily cleaned.” LIGHT AND STRIPES “I raised and widened the windows, which elevated the whole space. Painted floor stripes draw your eye across the room and add a nice graphic element.” MAUREEN FOOTER The Manhattan designer and author on having it all—in 650 square feet. GO BIG (YES,…

h 2 -whoa!

DIX BLUE 82 FARROW & BALL “You’d often see this teal along the AmalfiCoast in the 1940s and ’50s. The elegant blue brought Italy to this Hamptons house, contrasting and complementing the pale carved-marble tub—a nod to ancient Roman thermal baths—and emphasizing the high ceiling. A worldly color, it could chat as easily about 19thcentury poetry as vintage Italian motorcars.” ACHILLE SALVAGNI FRUIT SHAKE 2088-60 BENJAMIN MOORE “My clients were the catalyst for this hue. It’s not what I would instinctively gravitate toward in a bathroom, but they requested an uplifting pink for their master suite. The surprise is how flattering it is—the peachy undertones bathe your skin in a warm glow. What could be better in a room where you’re naked most of the time?” MARY JO FIORELLA SKYLIGHT 205 FARROW & BALL “This…
