every to-do list has persistent stragglers. My never-dones are the purchases I still need to make for our new home. This ought to be a fun task—it’s shopping, after all!—but my to-buy column hasn’t abated in a year. Lollygaggers include: a pair of stately standing lamps for the living room, fresh lampshades for the master, a shallow bookcase for Teddy’s room, and some reasonably priced picture lights to brighten a dim corner of the dining room. Maybe my online shopping is to blame. I’ve been doing the digital equivalent of walking in circles, endlessly Googling for a lampshade size that doesn’t seem to exist and finding picture lights that are costlier than the paintings themselves. Blessedly, the solutions came all at once. (And no, not in a wine-fueled Friday-night online-shopping bender— though…

quite a change

TULIP RED 1001 FINE PAINTS OF EUROPE “My relationship with this decadent red began when I moved into a tiny, sunless tenement in Manhattan. I went full-on opium den in the living room and painted all of it this color— walls, trim, doors, even the pressed-tin ceiling! People thought I was nuts, but it taught me that it’s OK to break the rules. Fastforward to now, and this is still the glossy red I rely on for drama. Here, it cranks up the suave in a client’s entry.” NICK OLSEN TWEED COAT CSP-85 BENJAMIN MOORE “I regret not using this dark, sexy hue—not quite gray, not quite brown— from the get-go in my Chicago apartment. I had spent years on the renovations, I was finally done, but the living room’s taupe walls felt...off. Repainting was…

fall furniture report

1 The Statement Piece It’s more vital than ever in this age of Pinterest and Instagram. Every house needs at least one! Look for something you can actually use, with a memorable silhouette, like this Moghul arch–inspired settee. Instant opulence. 2 CHANNEL TUFTING Oh, those sumptuous lines! The staple upholstery choice of old-Hollywood movie sets (and 1970s discotheques) is back and as louche as ever. Use it to add satisfying plumpness wherever your seating needs a boost. FRANK PONTERIO On pieces that stay with you the longest “I’ve had a pair of 1930s French club chairs, in the original leather and restrung, for 20 years. They look like an old bomber jacket— kind of worn— and make people comfortable right off the bat.” 3 Burl Is Back! And brighter. And more matte. Which gives this wood veneer—made from…
