Purple’s in the air— just flip through this issue! On a recent family trip to Switzerland, I found the most divine deep, dark periwinkle. It works brilliantly with the hues I live with and love, all on this page! Right, from top: My universal “garnish”: chartreuse, like this trim. It’s a squeeze of citrus—makes everything feel fresh! • Arsenic is one of Farrow & Ball’s famous color names and the bravest shade in my house. • Meals at home: bright tapers, neutral tablecloth. • Benjamin Moore’s rosy Boudoir, a wild success in my dining room! • My baby Whit with my next obsession— that periwinkle!—at the 1907 Hotel Walther, near St. Moritz. (Our mini-guide to family style is a few pages ahead!) • Clinique’s iconic Black Honey lipstick, now and always.…

a battle royal

PEIGNOIR 286 FARROW & BALL “This is about glamour, glamour, glamour. And fashion—it’s a mauve you usually only see in satin, as if a mercury silver was overlaid with the palest blush pink and a hint of blue and brown. So wonderful in a Paris apartment with modern pieces from Hervé Van der Straeten, vintage Maison Jansen furniture, and acres of smoky mink-colored silk velvets.” VEERE GRENNEY SPRING LILAC 1388 BENJAMIN MOORE “Surprisingly complex, this strikes a balance between delicate and strong. For a recent beach house project, we combined it with John Robshaw textiles, mirrored bedside tables, and apple-green gourd lamps. This was a small bedroom with just one window, but when sunlight hits the space, it absolutely glows.” BETHANY CASSELL VANN QUEEN ANNE LILAC SW 0021 SHERWIN-WILLIAMS “I love that this ashy lilac seems washed-out,…

in this luxe kitchen, purple reigns

Denise McGaha doesn’t do half measures when it comes to color. “I’m a big believer in committing to a palette. If you love a color, go big with it!” says the designer, who layered five shades of purple in this glamorous exhibition kitchen. McGaha found her initial inspiration in Shadow, a moody amethyst gray—and Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year—that she chose for the exterior cabinets. Its neighboring hues on the fan deck, a wispy lilac and a lush iris, were the ideal complements for the floor and ceiling, respectively. To ground the room, the designer topped the island with a slab of deep gray Silestone and an oil-rubbed bronze fixture from Kohler, which make the unit feel like a piece of furniture, not simply counter space. Gold-flecked antiqued mirror…

homecoming season

Ideas to Try & What to Buy A Colonial Charmer European settlers with design sensibilities straight from the old country favored symmetry and puritanical simplicity. Here’s a little twist on that. A Plucky Bungalow Arts and Crafts–style homes from SoCal to the Great Plains have a tip: A pop of color or pattern is all you need to cozy up your beloved abode. A Posh Victorian If you veer toward maximalism, announce it on the porch with a curvy knocker or a Gothic spindle that would make a Brontë sister blush. A Breezy Mediterranean Left your heart in Siena? Potted lavender, rustic textures, and twinkling lanterns are made for indoor/outdoor joie de vivre.
