welcome

It’s hard not to feel nostalgic as another year draws to a close. As we’re sending this issue to print, I’m reflecting with much fondness on the year that has been (while simultaneously anticipating a much-needed break!). We look to the celebrities and style-makers who have captured our fashion imaginations throughout 2019 with their show-stopping looks, on the red carpet and street, in our annual Best Dressed (p35). Some of our favourite Hollywood A-listers, including cover star Reese Witherspoon, reflect on their time in the spotlight (“In Her Own Words”, p86), and the original woman of style, Gloria Steinem, reveals the true power of laughter (p106). It’s also, of course, the best time of year to celebrate, socialise and shop! The InStyle team has truly delivered again this season with over…

ISLAND HOMES It’s been 100 years since Paspaley founder Nicholas Paspaley Sr travelled from the Greek island of Kastellorizo to Australia, and to celebrate, the jewellery label presents a range that brings the best of both worlds together. From Mediterranean Sea-blue lapis to lustrous local pearls, the pieces sit pretty on Pia Miller, the face of their campaign. SCHOOL OF STYLE Documenting catwalk shows spanning decades, these collectable coffee table books are veritable encyclopedias of designer style—and great gifts for the other fashion lovers in your life. TAKING SHAPE The minds behind beloved New Zealand brand Deadly Ponies have debuted DLYP, an ultra-curated edit of sculptural handbags. It’s officially the season to have (even more) fun with fashion, so don’t be afraid to shine brightly in metallic florals, sassy sequinned flares or a dance-floor ready tasselled skirt. A moody colour palette balances the bling, so you can say “yas, girl!” to bold accessories, too. Always trust statement earrings to inject a dose of dynamism into your outfit. And with labels such as Aje launching its own jewellery lines, there’s plenty of ear candy to pick from. MUST-SEE EXHIBITION Exploring the work of Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo—and that of her protégés Junya Watanabe and Tao Kurihara—Collecting Comme distills the designer’s major impact on the world of fashion. Collecting Comme, until July 26, 2020; ngv.vic.gov.au…

FRESH FACE Gucci steel and alligator watch, $2,565, and yellow-gold and alligator watch, $2,745; gucci.com. TWINKLE TOES You’ll want to make a date with these showpiece heels by Louis Vuitton. Headline-grabbing hot pink meets embellished crystals to deliver the ultimate outfit makers. BY THE SEASIDE Creative director Riccardo Tisci titled his second collection for Burberry “Tempest”, and the coastal reference washes effortlessly over his gilded selection of statement jewellery. SHARE THE JOY ’Tis the season to entertain, and Alex and Trahanas’ lively handpainted tableware is destined to make sunny alfresco lunches feel extra special. POWER SUIT Stripped-back swimwear is what Matteau does best, though the addition of sunset-toned hibiscus flowers ensures this simple shape burns bright. THE NATURAL WAY Local label Leif draws on botanical extracts to power bodycare with a distinctly Australian flavour. Our pick? This citrus-packed cleansing and moisturising…

ELLE FANNING THE OVERACHIEVER Fanning knows good fashion. Her penchant for picking gowns that are wildly glamorous, utterly original and always refined hits it out of the park, every time. Who else possesses that kind of red carpet acumen at only 21? GEMMA CHAN THE BREAKOUT STAR The Crazy Rich Asians actor landed on everyone’s sartorial radar this year after consistently wowing in everything from a waist-slit tunic and pants combo to this bright pink couture creation. The key to her success? An ability to carry every kind of look with an unwavering sense of serenity. GIGI & BELLA HADID THE STYLISH SIBLINGS For these model citizens, their best accessory is each other. Both modern tastemakers in their own right, we love it when the sister duo step out in bold outfits that project their personalities, but still…
