welcome

How great are coats? Not only are they a savvy sartorial investment, offering cosy comfort on bleak days, they can transform any outfit (even your weekend sweat pants) to smart status. And there’s a style to flatter every figure. Shop cleverly and yours will last for seasons to come, if you can manage to resist the chic new crop that springs up in stores each year. This autumn, cover-ups come in all shapes and shades–the most compelling splashed in tweedy checks, cut from teddy-bear fabrics, or riffing on the classic trench and peacoat. To make the task of selecting your new cold-weather companion that much simpler, our market editor, Lulu, has scoured the stores to bring you our pick of the best (p48). “Relaxed, comfortable and fun.” That’s how John Macarthur, the force behind iconic Bondi-based knitwear label Purl Harbour, describes the limited-edition sweaters he has created to celebrate Marcs’ 40th birthday. Drawn to the local retailer’s use of bright hues and bold prints, Macarthur met Mark Keighery, the late founder of Marcs, not long after Keighery opened his first store in 1979. Forty years later, Marcs’ sense of vibrancy remains and is something Macarthur has been careful to bring to the celebratory range. He also hopes the pieces will last for many more milestones to come. “I would like to think that they are timeless enough to transcend years and years and perhaps even end up as that well-worn, much-loved, misshaped, stretched, darned old favourite that is so comforting to put on,”…

ART CRUSH“I’m always inspired by Katharina Grosse’s use of colour. Her [2018] exhibition at the Gagosian gallery [in London] was amazing.”PASSION PROJECT“My brand’s 10th anniversary collection is a retrospective of reworked ideas from past seasons. I have so many favourites to look back on.”FITNESS FIX“I think walking is the most attainable type of exercise—I try for 10,000 steps every day. When I’m travelling, I always hit my number at the airport.”GO-TO SHOES“I’m a midi-heel kind of person, and Gianvito Rossi makes the most comfortable pairs.”COLLECTOR’S ITEM“The most special piece in my closet is a colourblock jersey shift [bottom] from my Central Saint Martins M.A. [and first] collection.
