I HAVE FOND MEMORIES of my childhood kitchen. I remember the knotty pine cabinetry that wrapped its perimeter—a testament to the room’s 1980s heritage—and the charming Dutch door, which ushered in cool breezes from the side yard. SATURATE Bursts of color look best when combined with a neutral palette. Pale yellow walls bring character to white cabinets and appliances without taking attention away from surrounding colorful accessories. ACCESSORIZE Bright accents are a fun way to dip your toes into a rich color palette. Here, orange–lined windows and painted doors are paired with Kelly green and sapphire to bring cottage charm. CONTRAST A warm-tone wood countertop on the island adds dimension to the room’s orange hues. Painted wood flooring in a pale green grounds the airy space. Glossy orange anchors a patterned bathroom. • Pops of pumpkin revive gray. • Punchy orange brings a modern flair. • Golden barstools emphasize a kitchen’s warmth.…

before you remodel

Working with a Designer Hiring a designer is a big commitment but well worth it. Here’s why: • You’ll spend less time and money in the long run. Though a DIY remodel may save you money upfront, a design professional can finish a high-quality project in a short time. “We’re there to take care of you and make sure things go smoothly and get done exactly how they should,” says designer Rebekah Zaveloff of KitchenLab Interiors. • They know the building codes. Ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to changing floor plans or electrical wiring. A hired professional will know the building codes you have to follow while renovating, potentially saving you from another major reconstruction down the road. • You’ll have access to a broader assortment of resources. In addition to having a…
