editor’s note

Lying on a table in the Read Street Tattoo Parlour in Baltimore, my best friend asked the tattoo artist—who was ready to ink her inner left arm—to describe the weirdest tattoo he’d ever given. The question derailed his focus, and he proceeded to explain his personal philosophy about tattoos, saying he believes people shouldn’t take them so seriously. “After all,” he said, “we are adults who have other adults draw pictures on our skin. It doesn’t get any goofier than that.” Although I believe tattoos are beautiful expressions of culture, values, and experiences, I couldn’t agree more with the point he was making. It’s important from time to time to be reminded to not take things so seriously, including ourselves. Much of what we worry about daily is important, and we…

hand-dyed cotton: exploring a yarn anomaly

Hand-dyed yarns are one of knitting’s greatest luxuries. The yarns’ distinct and “one of a kind” (often abbreviated as OOAK) colorways provide an amazing knitting experience. Today, dyeing pioneers are creating beautiful hand-dyed cotton as well as wool yarns and mastering the subtle differences between the two mediums. Because it is a plant fiber, cotton needs to be treated differently from its animal-fiber cousins. The first step, cleaning, is somewhat similar: scouring cotton yarn in simmering water with mild soap removes waxes, oils, and dirt. However, because cotton yarn needs to be treated with different chemicals than wool yarn, some wool dyes will not translate to the plant-based fiber. Cellulose, which makes up cotton fibers, reacts to dyes differently than the proteins that make up wool fiber. For example, although many…
