aging well

David Hockney confirms something we all know, but may not wish to admit: We age. Some of us are more willing than others to acknowledge that passing of time; however, it’s fair to assume that if we had Hockney there to document us as we change, the phenomenon might be a lot more palatable. For David Hockney: Drawing From Life (Artbooks D.A.P./$45), published to accompany a pair of exhibitions at London’s National Portrait Gallery and New York’s Morgan Library, four confident souls let the artist chronicle their lives over decades: Hockney’s late mother; his friend and textile designer Celia Birtwell; his favorite model and now curator Gregory Evans; master printer Maurice Payne. AT THE HEART of Alana Homesley’s approach to design is an emphasis on simplicity. “I strive for breathing room in everything I do,” says the Woodland Hills, California–based interior designer. She also points out that the inspiration for her work always comes from her clients. “Design is such a collaborative creative process,” she emphasizes. Designing the interiors of the new waterfront home of a family of five on the Point Dume promontory off the coast of Malibu, however, involved an extra layer of collaboration—in this case, with her clients’ architect, Erik Evens, principal of Evens Architects, who had developed the site plan, layout, and Spanish Colonial–style of the dwelling before the designer was brought on board. “Southern California has a great tradition of Mediterranean architecture—our clients have a passion for it…

pure vision

LATE ONE NIGHT, shortly after a couple completed an extensive renovation of their Park Avenue penthouse, the husband’s grown son dropped in for a visit. He stepped across the threshold, flipped on the lights and, for a split second, felt completely disoriented. “He thought he was in the wrong apartment,” the husband says with a chuckle. Convincing the husband to eliminate the existing moldings wasn’t easy at…
