all eyes on the olympia

Around this time each year the best bodybuilders on the planet get totally jacked up for the Mr. Olympia. Reigning champion, the genetically-gifted Phil Heath, has ruled the sport for the better part of a decade. Now he’s gunning for his seventh consecutive Sandow, the statue named after the famous Prussian strongman who first wowed Victorian-era crowds with his muscular physique. If successful, Heath will tie Arnold’s record and will inch ever closer to the all-time record of eight wins, jointly held by Ronnie Coleman and Lee Haney. When we look at the Mr. Olympia to gauge it’s overall popularity, it is interesting to note that last year’s competition and fitness expo covered more than 500,000 square feet with a total of 1,100 vendors and exhibitors selling their wares, and more than…

a message that will undoubtedly fall on deaf ears

“AS A COACH OR INDUSTRY LEADER IT’S YOUR DUTY TO ENSURE THAT THE PEOPLE ON YOUR TEAM STAY IN LINE WITH REGARD TO THEIR OPINIONS, THEIR HATE SPEECH AND THEIR SELFISH JUDGING OF OTHERS.” Whenever I sit to write my publisher’s letters, I tell myself that it’s important to convey a strong, positive and powerful message – something that will impart value and have a lasting impact on readers and, hopefully, on our sport and industry. But that’s not always easy, especially when there are burning issues that need addressing. I’ve been passionately publishing this magazine and involved in the bodybuilding industry for the past 14 years, so I’m definitely an old-school member of this sport. Until recently, going to shows was an epic experience. It used to be a time when…

tv coverage for mr. olympia

After over 30 years it’s actually happening. The 2017 edition of the prestigious Mr. Olympia competition will finally be back on TV in the homes of bodybuilding fans. Well, at least for those residing in the United States. Celebrity movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that his production company, Seven Bucks Production, would partner with CBS Sports to broadcast the annual bodybuilding spectacle on live TV. The Mr. Olympia, hosted by the IFBB, has not been screened on television since 1984. The competition was particularly popular when Arnold Schwarzenegger dominated it in the 1970s. Highlights for this year include reigning champion Phil Heath defending his crown for the 7th time and the legendary Flex Wheeler returning to the competitive stage in the Classic Physique division. Schwarzenegger, still the world’s most…

sad year for bodybuilding

The South African bodybuilding community is still reeling from the shock at the news of the deaths of IFBB Junior World Champion in the up to 75kg category, Sifiso Lungelo Thabete and IFBB Western Province official and former Ladies Bikini competitor Michelle O’ Shea. Thabete, who featured in our Muscle Evolution issue of May/ June 2017 under “Young Lion from Umlazi”, broke his neck in a freak accident while executing a back flip during an exhibition on Saturday, 5 August. He later succumbed to this fatal injury. Thabete, a rising star in the sport, won the Bodybuilding U/23 O/75kg division at the IFBB’s Muscle Mulisha Grand Prix 2. He was due to compete in the upcoming IFBB National Championships in September, with the hope of returning to the international stage at…

bernadine gets ibff pro card in spain

Bernadine du Pisanie received her Pro Card from the International Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (IBFF) after winning the Miss Fitness over 40 category and the Women’s Overall title in spectacular fashion at the recent IBFF World Championships in Cartagena, Spain. This is a phenomenal achievement for Bernadine, who only started competing in 2016 after attending a social media workshop presented by WBFF Pro Jenadine Havenga. “I was incredibly inspired by Jenadine’s story. When she spoke about her experiences on stage I decided there and then to also try my hand at competing,” says Bernadine, who lives in Pretoria. When she entered her first novice show and failed to place, she questioned the judges who told her to rather compete in the Ladies Body Fitness category. “The judges said that my shoulders and…
