into the wild

Anna Parini, Illustrator “YOU SAY YOU WANT A RESOLUTION...,” PAGE 34 If I had no fear, I’d...drive a car. Traffic frightens me—I’d rather stick to my handy bike. Every day I try to break out of my comfort zone by...wearing colors. When it comes to clothes, black and blue are my palette of choice. When I need a break from my routine, I...grab my laptop and move my office outside. Terry Tempest Williams, Writer “WE, THE PEOPLE,” PAGE 83 The most adventurous thing I’ve ever done is...hike a desert in a remote region in Namibia in search of the endangered black rhino. When I need a break from my routine, I...take a walk, binoculars in hand, knowing an unexpected bird may be nearby. Last time I spotted a great gray owl that could…

lady of the canyon

This year Oprah’s ready to live on the edge! WHEN OPRAH VOWED THAT 2017 would be her Year of Adventure, full of exhilarating new experiences and broadened horizons, she knew exactly where to start. “Let’s go to the Grand Canyon!” she told creative director Adam Glassman. “I want a Cheryl Strayed moment.” And away they went, with a perfectly grand vision for our cover. Of course, Oprah, with her glam squad in tow, wasn’t exactly roughing it, but she did rise at 2:30 a.m. to get a gorgeous sunrise shot. The crew agreed that greeting the dawn at one of the world’s natural wonders was nothing short of spectacular. And Oprah was wild about the adventure, exclaiming, “I love this cover!” We do, too. —NICOLE McGOVERN YEAR OF ADVENTURE SWEEPSTAKES Win a Trip…

rich rituals

PEOPLE POWER After reading “Voting Rites” in the November issue, I had to write you. I grew up on a farm in Mississippi. I saw my parents and grandparents get up on Election Day and head to the polls. Whether it was a presidential race or not, they were there. I didn’t understand why until I sat down with my mother. She explained what she, my father, and my grandparents went through in the ’60s just to register. They actually needed protection from the National Guard! I made a commitment to take part in every election I could. At 18, I voted absentee in our local election, and I’ve been voting ever since. Regardless of whether my candidate wins or loses, I will always make sure my vote is counted. Our…

here we go!

A FEW MONTHS AGO, I put a challenge to the O team: What do we want 2017 to bring to our lives? What should it show us, teach us, inspire in us? I knew what I wanted: to visit new places and see new things, to make my life feel richer, fuller, more alive. And it hit me that you, dear reader, might want the same. That’s why we’re making 2017 the Year of Adventure, full of bold excursions (which you’ll hear about starting on page 84), exciting sweepstakes (which you should definitely enter, starting this month—see page 10 for details!), and all the advice you need to begin transforming your life. This 12-month journey is unlike anything we’ve ever done, and I want you to be part of it. My own…
