What a cracker of a summer. For me it was filled with plenty of beach time and balmy evenings in my outdoor room with a cider, but alas, like all good things, it must come to an end. Don’t be too sad, though; as I’ve said before, in many parts of this great country, we still have plenty of time to enjoy our outdoor spaces before the cooler weather sets in. Of course, this means lots more time for an outdoor cook-up with family and friends. Our outdoor cooking feature is jam-packed with information about the latest barbecues, outdoor kitchens and woodfired ovens, while barbecuing expert Andrea Mead shows us how to revamp our cooking routine by rethinking menus and giving the barbecue some much-needed TLC. During my honeymoon in Europe…

out and about

The Maxx Royal Kemer Resort, Turkey Turkey's first and only grand boutique resort, the Maxx Royal Kemer Resort, is located on the beaches on Antalya in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. The resort fits in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, where the picturesque mountains meet the Mediterranean Sea. The resort’s unique design concept was strongly influenced by the four elements of the universe. GeoID used this source of inspiration to create a group of 24 motifs exclusively for the project. In hues of azure, bronze, emerald and tangerine, these inspirational designs signify — respectively — water, earth, air and fire. These patterns can be seen repeated throughout the hotel in diverse forms and are symbolic of the fundamental components of the cosmos. Positioned directly before the spectacular 400m-long beach, the Maxx…

SUSTAINABLE FUTURES Bamboo flooring is finding its way outdoors as a durable decking alternative to natural hardwood timber. House of Bamboo vertical bamboo decking looks stunning in an array of applications, around the outdoor kitchen, in outdoor lounge spaces, alfresco areas, or even as swimming pool decking. Bamboo is a renewable resource, so it gets the green tick of approval. Once cut, the culms shoot up others and it grows more rapidly than timber. Keep the deck clean to ensure there is no mildew or algae build-up, which can make the surface a little slippery underfoot in wet areas. The standard length is 5.4m and it comes in widths of 140mm, 90mm, 68mm and 42mm. The boards are precision milled and pre-finished, ready to install and beautify your outdoor surrounds. The product has…

perfect harmony

Not all outdoor rooms need to be massive stand-alone structures. On this Sydney property, A Total Concept has created an integrated outdoor room for the owners in a small area that incorporates everything a family could want for socialising and entertaining at home. The rear of the property has no outlook and little privacy, so A Total Concept bounded the entire space with tropical perimeter gardens. This has created a concealed room and also achieved a stunning outlook over the swimming pool from the lounge, kitchen and living areas, both day and night. The outdoor room incorporates a traditional tongue-and-groove timber ceiling and large skylights, plus rendered masonry columns and walling that, together with the generous timber daybed and lounges, tie the space back to the finishes on the home. The surrounding…

hanging out

With a vision of a casual, modest, easy-to-carefor and relaxed holiday house, these New Zealand homeowners wanted the surrounding bush and incredible views of their site to be the heroes of the design and for their house to sit comfortably within the setting. Although it would be built for a family of four, it also needed to accommodate guests easily and have a relaxed, “hanging-out” atmosphere. The land that the family selected, on Kawau Island, one of the largest islands in New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf, is very steep and covered in native bush. “There is something very special about a house built on an island, and Kawau Island in particular,” says designer Tim Dorrington, director of Auckland-based Dorrington Atcheson Architects. As there are very few roads on the island, this site is…
