I hate being cold but I must admit, I’m happy to have a break from the humid weather in Sydney. After you’ve spent so much time, effort and money on creating your ideal outdoor room, it would be a shame to retreat inside during the cooler months. That’s why this issue, we take a look at the hottest heating options available today. Not only do we look at traditional heating methods including fireplaces and electric strip radiant heaters, we also explore how you can decorate with fire using some interesting fire features such as fire tables and bio-fuel torches that you can hang. I love the idea that the functional elements in your outdoor space can add style, too. Once you’ve got your backyard toasty warm, you can continue to entertain…

HIDDEN GEM After moving houses 11 times, Craig Rossetti’s 13-year-old twins put their feet down and said, “No more moving!” So the architect decided to design a home that would hopefully last for many years to come. It can be easy to get carried away and build big instead of smart, but this residence includes all the necessities of a family home without going overboard. Instead, a considered and restrained approach reigns supreme. Basking in all of nature’s glory, this house is a success story of working with the surrounding environment instead of trying to compete with it. At one with nature, the outdoor area provides a stylish place to lounge, entertain and enjoy the warm weather. The alfresco dining set-up offers shade and allows for cooling breezes, plus it’s the…

two's company

A Total Concept Landscape Architects was commissioned to design the swimming pool and gardens for this Sydney property more than 15 years ago. Recently, principal of the company, John Storch, was requested to incorporate two outdoor rooms, one an extensive cabana and the other, an entertaining area for adults. “The location of the entertaining area was set immediately across from the house and runs the full width of the property,” says John. As an elevated area and close to the indoor lounge and kitchen, it has been developed for adult entertaining with pleasant overviews of the new cabana and fully tiled pool. “The cabana was set adjacent to the swimming pool to the rear of the property to visually maximise the lawn and garden,” says John. This also meant that due to…

stepping out

As soon as you step out into this remarkable rear-garden retreat, you’re transported away from the cares and distractions of the work-a-day world to a place where comfort and pleasure are the guiding principles. This wasn’t always the case, however. The old garden was run down, tired-looking and poorly built. The same could be said of the area along the side of the house. To remedy the situation, the owners asked Steve Taylor of COS Design to come up with something that would complement the home’s renovated interior and provide an enhanced lifestyle. Keen to spend time outside all year round, the owners put an undercover entertaining area at the top of their must-have list. This was to include an informal dining space, a fireplace and an outdoor lounge area. Improvements to…
