the big breath

“THIS... IS... SPARTA! Yeah, I know that wasn’t going to last.” In a lot of ways, we are now in the waiting time. This is the time before the massive rush of AAA titles that now typify the end of the gaming year. Your Assassin’s Creeds, your Battlefields, and your CODBLOPS or whatever iteration of that franchise Activision’s peddling this year. It can be a really tough time to build the focus of a magazine... or a great time to celebrate the diversity of the industry. So this issue is a bit all over the place. A sudden random influx of headphones from everyone! NO PROBLEM! Budget AMD motherboards - good stuff. Stupid high-end AMD processors - WE LOVE IT! Indie titles, AAA games that disappoint and thrill and everthing in between from…

pathfinder: kingmaker rpg gets a release date

Pathfinder is arguably the most celebrated of all Dungeons & Dragons spinoff settings, with a rich setting and even richer ruleset based off the D20 engine - and the video game iteration is hitting PC in September this year! DeepSilver made the announcement this morning that Pathfinder: Kingmaker will be released on the 25th of September, and this gives us some serious hype. The game is set in the Stolen Lands and explores characters and locations both well known to tabletop fans, and all new creations for the game on PC. One of the most interesting features is the ability to found a whole kingdom, which reflects the player’s character and their beliefs and the choices they’ve made in game.…

ea adds new membership tier to origin

Electronic Arts’ Origin service is the awkward middle child of PC game services. It’s got nowhere near the depth of Steam (of course), but nor is it the same steaming pile of fail that is Ubisoft’s uPlay service. It just works? Kinda? If you’ve been wanting more from it, though, EA’s new Origin Access Premier subscription may just excite you a little bit. The service costs $19.95 a month (or $129.99 a year), and for that you get access to The Vault - a rotating roster of entirely free games - but also early access to key EA titles, like these: • EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL 19 Hall of Fame Edition (August 2, 2018) • EA SPORTS™ FIFA 19 Ultimate Edition (September 20, 2018) • Battlefield™ V Deluxe Edition (October 11, 2018) • Anthem™ Legion of…

super retro horror game world of horror hitting pc next year

A year or two ago I think someone must have left a copy of the collected works of HP Lovecraft on a table at E3 or something, because we are getting a whole metric mystic crapload of Lovecraftian horror games right now. And they’re a really diverse bunch, as WORLD OF HORROR shows. There’s retro, and then there’s grey-scale pixel art with matching chiptunes. And World of Horror (yelling is so tiring), still looks super scary. “I set out to create something that illustrates just how vulnerable one’s sanity can be,” said Pawel Kozminski, founder of Panstasz. “I want WORLD OF HORROR to haunt players in a way that creates an uncomfortable sense of apprehension, something that slowly builds uneasiness and anxiety through atmosphere and the uncanny.” Because more anxiety is just what…

middle earth: shadow of war gets ‘free’ update to make it actually not shit

Warner is being kind of... a jerk when it boasts that this new update for Middle of Earth: Shadow of War is ‘free’. I should hope so, since it largely exists to fix up problems that were baked into the game at launch. The new update streamlines the endgame Shadow Wars, and adds in new narrations from the Witch King, Talion, and - fucking hell - Shelob. Winning this part of game also unlocks new rewards, and you can keep on on upgrading your fortresses after the campaign finishes. There are also new customisation options and a new level cap - it’s boosted up to 80 now - and Nemesis mission now offer more XP for faster campaign progression. There are also new Legendary Orcs to cut to pieces, and you can…
