you are so inspiring!

Hasn’t it been a tough time? And yet, what you Prima readers show me on a daily basis is just how resilient and amazing you all really are. You’ve emailed and written about the ways you have managed to cope during lockdown, the new hobbies you’ve started and how you have tried to be positive. And it’s this sense of keeping upbeat with whatever life throws at you that marks our July issue, too. I love the women who have found new and better lives for themselves by the sea (p26), and we’ve celebrated those community heroes who have tirelessly worked to help others (p34). By the way, please do send me your nominations for the people you’d like to celebrate – the details are on the page. We’ve also…

‘let’s be kinder to each other’

‘When I decided I wouldn’t apologise for being happy, it was very powerful’ Gaby lives in London with her husband David, a publisher. She has two daughters, Libbi-Jack, who’s 18, and 13-year-old Amelie. STAYING UPBEAT Positivity is so important to me. When I first started out in the industry, people used to ask if I was always this happy. I’d say ‘Yes, I’m so sorry, I am’. But when my mum died, 23 years ago, I decided I wasn’t going to apologise for being happy ever again. It was very powerful. I remember the first interview I did afterwards, and they said ‘You’re still smiling’. I said ‘Yeah. I am, and I’m happy to be alive’. Then there was silence. I thought, ‘You know what? I’m not going to say sorry for being…

gaby’s favourite things

BOOK I’ve just started reading Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, which a friend recommended to me. I really loved Emma Kennedy’s The Things We Left Unsaid: I got lost in it and I miss the characters so much. FILM When Harry Met Sally (right). It’s funny, it makes you cry, it makes you smile, and it makes me happy. I also love La La Land. I’d tell everybody to watch both now. RECIPE I love to make salmon in white miso. I mix the miso in my NutriBullet with tamari (an almost gluten-free soy sauce), ginger, garlic and a little water and pour it over. I bake the fish on a bed of sliced baby aubergines, red onion, courgette and butternut squash. Delicious. TV SHOW I’m a lifelong fan of EastEnders…

gaby’s tips for keeping positive

When you first wake up in the morning, force a smile on your face. Make that the first thing you do, so it kids the brain that you are feeling happy. If you smile, you feel better. Put on some happy songs. Dance and move around while listening to a tune that makes you feel happy. As corny as it sounds, Pharrell Williams’s Happy is one of those songs that just makes you feel better. Take time to look around you. Don’t stay in your own mind just looking down at a small screen. Even if you’re in a flat and can’t get out, open a window and just look at the sky, because seeing that space really does help. Speak to people. Talk about how you feel. If you’re feeling down, don’t…
