be a rainmaker

IF YOU FEEL THE WORLD has gone a little crazy, you’re not alone. Last year was insane; out of control. Fires ravaged our nation as a consequence of climate change while our leader holidayed on a beach and drafted laws about religious discrimination. A narcissist with no filter or humility governed the world’s largest nuclear power like a capricious six-year-old on a sugar high. It was hard to distinguish #fakenews from real reporting. To me, it feels as if humanity has become self-deluded and blind to the very nature of what the truth is; as if we’re all in a car arguing while hurtling towards a canyon with no brakes. Indeed at times like this it’s easy to feel powerless but at the same time overwhelmed with a frantic energy. Put simply,…

life lessons for mindful movers

Meditation and mistakes Forgetful yogis rejoice! The latest studies show meditation might help you to become less error prone. Published in the journal Brain Sciences, the study looked at how meditation that focuses on awareness of feelings, thoughts and sensations alters brain activity in a way that suggests increased recognition of errors. Just one guided session was able to change the brain activity of non-meditators, although more practice is necessary to actually impact behaviour. See the study titled ‘On Variation in Mindfulness Training: A Multimodal Study of Brief Open Monitoring Meditation on Error Monitoring’ at ARE YOGIS MORE LIKELY TO FIND A DATE ONLINE ? chronic illness

STANDING ON THE cold concrete floors of an old department store turned library, tucked into the timeless emerald hills of my hometown, I look out over a yoga class of 10 or so students. With a population of less than 2,500, Whitesburg is in the far south-eastern part of the state—in the coalfields of the central Appalachian Mountains. The faces of my yoga students are familiar. Some are former co-workers; one was my fourth-grade teacher. Most have never done yoga before, and they are trusting me to guide them. And I’m not your typical teacher. Throughout my life, I’ve battled a long list of issues—depression, anxiety, and chronic illnesses, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, dysautonomia, and polyarthritis. Symptoms such as constant fatigue, brain fog, and migraines have, at times, created such a disconnect…
