As soon as those frosty, dew-laden mornings hit you like a proverbial snowman in a snow fight, it’s time to take off to warmer climates, right? Far north NT and QLD used to be my go-to for a mid-year icebreaker, but when putting together this issue of Caravan World, I looked at other less than sub-tropical destinations to appreciate during the cooler months and take in that ‘hygge’ (pronounced hoo-gah) feeling. Hygge is the Danish word used to acknowledge a special feeling or moment during those dark, colder months. It's a term generally used within the home or living space, yet we thought the RV community could benefit from embracing a similar ethos while on the road. Catherine Lawson shows us 7 steps to hygge on your next winter caravan or…

avan proudly partners

Actor and media personality Samuel Johnson is no stranger to a challenge. He has begun a two-year trip around Australia in his new Avan Ovation M5 motorhome along with his support crew’s Golf Savannah 584 Hardtop caravan, in a bid to raise $10 million for cancer research. He was presented with keys to the new motorhome by Avan Director Scott van Baardwyk at Avan HQ in Pakenham,VIC, and was very excited about the opportunity to reach out to remote communities on his journey to spread the word about breast cancer and raise funds for his loveyoursister.org charity. The Dancing with the Stars winner co-founded the charity with his sister Connie Johnson, who once dared her brother to unicycle around Australia to raise funds to support the Garvan Institute of Medical Research at…

the ‘average’ aussie rv owner revealed

Recently-released research has shown that the average age of an RV owner in Australia is 33 and has an annual income between $48,000-$72,000. The inaugural RV Consumer Report 2018 also reveals RV ownership is at record high levels, with one in 13 households in Australia registering an RV of some description. The research, touted as the most comprehensive consumer study of its kind in Australia to examine RV purchasing and usage preferences, also indicated the typical RV owner is more active and enjoys an outdoor lifestyle. It found 87 per cent of current RV owners have a preference for outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing. And while many indicated they waited until later in life to purchase an RV (linked to retirement) 42 per cent of current RV owners have children under…

twilight time for follow the sun relay

A 12-month relay where different types of travellers climbed aboard a Winnebago motorhome and travelled the country is about to wind up. The Follow the Sun Relay is a collaborative effort between Dometic, Winnebago and Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA) to promote regional tourism and the caravan and camping lifestyle as a holiday option. The relay began on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the Queensland Caravan Camping and Touring Supershow in Brisbane, where the first explorers began their trip. Since then, drivers have taken the Winnebago around Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and is now making its way back to Queensland. Relay teams have included occupants of all ages and demographics. Bali bombing victim Ben Tullipan, who lost two legs in the tragedy, took the wheel…

could free camping be killing caravan parks?

Debate is raging in Tasmania over whether the rise in free camping facilities, including those sponsored by local councils, will spell the end of the traditional caravan park within a decade. Caravanning Tasmania president Rowen Carter told ABC News that park owner-operators were struggling. "The caravan park sector is in fast decline, and there will probably be as few as 10 genuine caravan parks left in Tasmania in the next eight to 10 years if something doesn't change," he said. Carter’s comments reflect industry figures that show the number of caravan parks across Tasmania has dropped from 100 to 77 in 10 years — almost 25 per cent. And there are more than 300 low-cost or free camping sites around the state. He said the issue wasn’t with existing free camping sites, but rather…
