A few months ago, my mom gave me an unexpected gift: my senior year high school yearbook. Curious, I looked up my senior quote, expecting something profound. Instead, I found: “It’s not the givin’. It’s not the gettin’. It’s the lovin’. There, I said it.” It’s the lesson Garfield learns at the end of A Garfield Christmas Special, a television program I watched repeatedly as a kid. It was a nice sentiment, but…Garfield? Did I really want to be remembered by a quote from the lazy cartoon cat obsessed with lasagna? And yet, as I struggled to write an editor’s letter about how winter is the season of giving, my mind drifted to the quote. I had planned to point out the time-saving gift tips from our staff and our readers…

IN THE MIDDLE Textured solids in sage and navy generate contrast and emphasize how each unit is rotated 90°. Fabrics are from the Flannel Chambray collection by Robert Kaufman Fabrics (robertkaufman.com). CENTER STAGE When using a single colorway (in this example, navy batiks) for the center vertical and horizontal rows, a plus sign emerges. getting to know… violet craft

WHAT/WHO INSPIRED YOU TO START SEWING/QUILTING? My grandmother Betty made my Halloween costumes, so I grew up around constant creativity. A family friend showed me how to quilt when I was about 17. My first quilt had alternating Nine-Patch and appliquéd heart blocks done in green, pink, and cream calicoes, and I hand-tied it with yarn. Ten years later I was inspired by a free pattern in Amy Butler’s Gypsy Caravan collection, and I joined the Portland Modern Quilt Guild. That was what hooked me. I haven’t stopped quilting since. WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN YOU ARE DESIGNING FABRICS OR QUILTS? Nature! And everything else around me. All of my quilts and my fabrics are based on my own original photography of the things I see around me every day. DO YOU SEW ANYTHING SPECIAL…
