Susan Skelly What has been your best travel experience of 2018 so far? The Canadian Maritimes region, on Canada’s wild east coast, magics up a swag of fascinating museums whose subjects include inventors (Alexander Graham Bell), folk artists (Maud Lewis), fictional heroines (Anne of Green Gables) and indigenous artisans (the First Nation Mi’kmaq), as well as museums dedicated to maritime endeavour and Machiavellian sea creatures. Which two destinations are next on your wish list? Next up: Literary Morocco and the awesome Kimberley. Sue Wallace What has been your best travel experience of 2018 so far? This year’s highlight was about slow travel. I clip-clopped my way along the backroads of Bavaria in an open landau carriage with the wind in my hair and the sun on my face. Which two destinations are next on your…

welcome to the spring issue

Travel changes our perception and sometimes affects our homes, too. We like to bring back a little of the places we visit, or inspiration for our own living space. We may even discover a place that pulls at our heart strings so much we end up relocating. The item I most recently lugged home was from a trade show: a hand-painted surfboard by young Indigenous artist Zachary Bennett-Brook. Before that, it was a reindeer skin from Molde in Norway; previously, oversized statues and various works of art. What I am perpetually collecting, however, is images of hotel decor. I literally have thousands of photos of the most incredible bathrooms and hotels and suites, from African lodges to private island resorts. These ideas will eventually manifest in my home renovation … exotic outdoor…

signature concierge

Within a voluptuary volcano Dramatically perched within the amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, the six thatched-roof villas that make up Rwandan forest retreat Bisate Lodge are constructed in harmony with the surrounding environment. Even during the construction phase, tools were carried by hand to the site – at some 2,650 metres’ altitude – in order to ensure that the vegetation not be damaged. The lodge’s interiors are filled with richly textured patterns that recall the Rwandan art form of imigongo and emerald accents that echo the verdant forest outside. A crackling fire is prepared each evening between the bedroom and living area, and the menu fuses local cuisine ingeniously with international flavours. Beyond, meet the gorillas of Volcanoes National Park with guided treks and explore the rich biodiversity of the Albertine…
