the apple of my eye

WITH THE RISE OF ADOBE INDESIGN, PUBLISHING DOESN’T NEED TO RELY ON THE MAC/QUARK COMBO THAT DOMINATED THE INDUSTRY WHEN I FIRST BEGAN MY CAREER. AT THE MOMENT, my personal computing environment is near-perfectly eclectic. I have a desktop PC for gaming, and a Windows 10 S Surface Laptop for travel. I’ve got an Android-powered phone, and an Apple iPad that – to my chagrin – I have not even charged this year... For work, I have two Mac notebooks. One stays in the office (the more modern and powerful one), while I have a second one for when I work from home. This reliance upon Macs for work is a relatively new developent, though. For the last... well, very long time, my work and play machines have been PCs. With the…

sennheiser momentum true wireless headphones

IT’S HARD NOT to recommend the Sennheiser Momentum range. With over-ear, on-ear, in-ear, and wireless models available, there’s seemingly a set of headphones for everyone. But what should we expect from the company’s first completely untethered Bluetooth earbuds? Though conventional wisdom has long placed limits on what can be achieved with headphones’ more compact, in-ear counterparts – or over a wireless Bluetooth connection – the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earbuds look to continue the company’s audio heritage within those physical constraints. When we first tried out the earphones at IFA 2018 we were immediately impressed by the quality of both the audio and the craftsmanship that had gone into these compact, untethered earbuds. But at $499, these true wireless earbuds are far from cheap. So are they worth the asking price? DESIGN The Sennheiser Momentum…

popular chrome ad-blockers could be crippled under proposed design changes

GOOGLE IS PLANNING on making changes to its Chrome Extensions platform and, at the time of writing, was listing them in a publicly available draft document called the “Manifest version 3”. It has led to growing concerns over the limitations the changes will set on some ad-blocking plugins. The manifest states that Google will “strive to limit the blocking version of webRequest, potentially removing blocking options from most events”. Meaning the current API available – which allows ad blockers to not just block ads but also modify or redirect network requests – will, in future, only be able to ‘read’ requests. This limitation will affect the functionality of some popular ad blockers, especially uBlock Origin and uMatrix. Developer of the extensions, Raymond Hill, complained that if these changes were implemented,…

The world’s largest manufacturer of consumer drones has unearthed several cases of corruption within its ranks that will cost it millions in losses. The corruption was discovered as part of a quality control check and the company has handed over a number of the cases to the Chinese authorities. Some of the charges involve employees inflating the price of individual parts for personal gain, thus giving DJI’s drones a premium price tag. microsoft’s cortana to stop competing with amazon alexa and google assistant

MICROSOFT’S CEO SATYA Nadella as conceded that Cortana isn’t being positioned to compete with either Alexa or Google Assistant. Instead of being rivals, Nadella sees Cortana being integrated into the competition as an additional skill, saying “Would it be better off, for example, to make Cortana a valuable skill that someone who is using Alexa can call? Or should we try to compete with Alexa? We, quite frankly, decided that we would do the former. Because Cortana needs to be that skill for anyone who is a Microsoft Office 365 subscriber.” If that happens, Nadella observed that users should be able to use Cortana on any Alexa or Google Assistant-enabled device like any other Microsoft app on Android or iOS. In fact, Nadella doesn’t think Cortana will find her way into…
