welcome!

As we are on the eve of Valentine’s Day, I hope you enjoy our romantic real life opening story this week (Page 6). Brenda sent a group text to her friends and family. But it included a wrong number that went to a stranger, Isaiah. Like Brenda, he was single. I won’t spoil the story, but that wrong text was the beginning of a beautiful love story – and family! We have shared many similarly lovely love stories over the years. There was Emmy, in 2018, who fell in love with Vic, who was living on the streets at the time. Vic is now well and truly back on his feet, and the couple have two beautiful kids. Then there was Jess, who fell for the man who’d anonymously donated…

a wrong number found me a hubby!

Sitting at my desk, I whipped out my phone and typed out an inspiring quote to send to all my contacts. Most weeks, I liked to send some words of encouragement to my friends and family. But as my work phone started ringing, I saved the message as a draft and forgot all about it. It wasn’t until that evening that I remembered to send it. Ten minutes later, a reply came through from Jose. I’d met him a few weeks before when visiting my sister. Hey, who is this? it said. It’s Brenda, Roxi’s sister, remember me? I typed. Another message arrived. I don’t think we’ve ever met, my name is Isaiah. I must have got the wrong number! Sending an apology, I thought that would be the end of it. But then Isaiah messaged again. No worries, how’s…

i turned in my own son for murder

Janette Campbell was having problems with her son. She knew 16-year-old Aaron was smoking cannabis, drinking heavily and playing violent video games. She also knew he had an unhealthy obsession with the character Slender Man, a fictional child abductor. But with her husband Christopher, an oil industry worker overseas for long periods of time, Janette felt powerless to take action by herself. Instead, she kept quiet, hoping it was a phase her son would grow out of. And so, when Aaron asked if he could host a party for 15 of his friends at their home on July 1, 2018, she simply gave in. That night, Aaron smoked marijuana and downed wine. After arguing with him about the drinking and the noise, Janette went to bed, leaving her son to it. The next day, she woke to terrible…

meet ember hero with a waggy tail

Australia is famous for its bright blue skies, serene beaches and vast bushland. But photos of our nation have recently depicted a different kind of scenery – smoke-filled skylines, deserted beaches and entire communities reduced to ash. Then there’s the heart-wrenching pictures of our hero fireys tirelessly battling the catastrophic blazes that have ravaged the country since September 2019, or snatching rare moments of much-needed rest. One firey’s daughter posted a photo of her dad getting five minutes sleep on their lawn after he finished his 10th 12-hour day in a row volunteering with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS). Today I heard my dad cry, Jenna O’Keeffe wrote. He said ‘Jen I have never seen anything like this, it’s never ending.’ While some towns have experienced downpours of rain helping the smoke…

travelling cats

Daikichi and Fuku-Chan are a couple of well-travelled rescue cats. The duo have spent the last several years crossing Japan with their owner, Daisuke Nagasawa. They have visited all 47 prefectures and seen major landmarks including Mount Fuji, the cherry blossom gardens of Kyoto, Himeji Castle and Hiroshima’s ‘floating’ torii gate. Love bug Wanting a special gift for a loved one or an ex? For around $20, the Bronx Zoo in New York allows you to name a Madagascar hissing roach after someone you love, or loathe, for Valentine’s Day. It’s all for a good cause, with the proceeds going to support wildlife conservation. Bake fail Self-taught baker Emma Plummer attempted to make heart-shaped macarons but things didn’t go quite to plan. When the French cookies came out of the oven they looked more…
