a mindset of advent

THE ADVENT WREATH For a pretty and symbolic alternative to a calendar, consider an advent wreath. In the Christian tradition, four candles are placed on the wreath to represent the virtues of hope, love, joy, and peace. Light an additional candle each week during the four weeks of advent. If you set your wreath on a flat surface, you can place a fifth candle in the center to light on Christmas Day. Make Your Own: SUPPLIES • Gold-tone metal hoop • 4 Christmas tree candle clips • Fresh greenery of your choice (eucalyptus, cedar, pine, juniper, etc.) • Pruning snips • Florists wire (22 gauge) • 4 candles to fit clips • Hot-glue gun and glue sticks • Ribbon, cord, or string STEP 1 Clip the candle clips onto your gold hoop. STEP 2 Cut stems of greenery to cover the desired amount…

the most wonderful day of the year

SETTING ASIDE A SINGLE, WHOLEHEARTED DAY TOGETHER CAN CREATE SPACE FOR MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME.The HOLIDAY MEMORIES WE REMINISCE ABOUT THE MOST ARE OFTEN A COLLECTION OF SIMPLE MOMENTS MADE MAGICAL BY MEANINGFUL TIME SPENT WITH THOSE WE LOVE. This season consider reserving a full, uninterrupted day at home to focus only on connecting with your family in a memorable way. The intentional time together is worth it, but there’s a good chance you’ll make lasting memories in the process, too. Plan the day as a family or make it a surprise for the little ones. Include beloved traditions or try something new. You needn’t make this day about pursuing perfection or outdoing last year’s experience. But choose activities you think your family will really enjoy. This kind of set-apart…

advent the arrival of a notable person thing or event

In many ways, waiting can feel ordinary. We wait in lines. We wait for mail. We wait for news. Sometimes, though, how we choose to wait can lead us to a deeper sense of hopeful expectation. Every winter, the season of advent invites us to practice this posture of waiting in the final weeks of the year. The anticipation that surrounds the advent season gently reminds us to look past our immediate circumstances to something bigger. To consider what might be coming with joyful expectation. To embrace living in the “not yet”—and to sink into the beauty that’s hidden beneath all that is still unknown. The weekly and daily rituals during advent can serve as promptings to help us value the time of waiting during the holiday season. An array of advent…

recipe box: cinnamon squares

This recipe has been a family favorite for years. When we make them at home, it’s typically all hands on deck because it’s really a labor of love—but we all agree that the bit of extra effort required for these cinnamon squares makes them all the more delicious. It’s hard to imagine anything better than the original version, but the seasonal variations (page 54) don’t disappoint.
