Two years ago I was in Hawaii with my father and sister for the Pipe Masters. Like the competitors in the event, we were at the mercy of the mercurial North Shore conditions. When howling onshores and huge closeouts colluded to ensure a lay day was called, I figured the best thing to do was jump in the car and drive west side for a day of good old-fashioned rubberneck sightseeing with the family. ANDO’S JE NE SAIS QUOI - THAT INDEFINABLE QUALITY THAT MAKES CRAIG SO GOOD. Frequently, Craig Anderson is captured in moments of frontside artistry where his crane-like wings are tipped symmetrically, the tow-edge buried by just the right amount of pressure, and that nimble frame stretched long and languid in a tube stance that pays homage to Lopez. However, in this shot we are treated to Ando’s interpretation of the backside, bottom turn. This time the pliable torso is fully compressed but slung so low it almost skims the curling surface. The inside hand tickles the face, while the outside paw is called upon to provide maximum leverage. WAVES CAN BE LIKE NIGHTCLUBS – SUDDENLY THEY ARE ON TREND AND EVERYONE WANTS TO BE THERE. IN RECENT YEARS, THIS OFFSHORE BOMBIE HAS EMERGED AS THE GOTO SPOT FOR EVERY SURFER IN OZ CHASING A SLICE OF BIG-WAVE GLORY. WHILE THE REGULARS AT THE WAVE ARE NOT READY TO PUT BOUNCERS ON THE DOOR, SO TO SPEAK, THEY ARE CONCERNED THAT THINGS ARE GETTING A LITTLE OUT OF HAND. “WHEN THERE’S 20 OR 30 GUYS ON EIGHT-FOOT BOARDS IN A TIGHT PACK AND THEY’RE BAILING, IT’S CHAOTIC,” INSISTS SCOTT DENNIS, THE SURFER PICTURED ON THIS FLARED, GREEN MONSTER. dooma ‘steels’ the win

ME AND DOOMA STARTED OUR CAREERS AROUND THE SAME TIME, ABOUT FOUR YEARS PRIOR TO THIS SHOT BEING TAKEN. WE TRAVELLED IN THE AUSSIE TEAM TO THE US, WHERE DOOMA WON THE WORLD JUNIORS AND I BOMBED OUT BADLY IN THE OPENS. DOOMA WAS AN AMAZING YOUNG SURFER WITH A CADET AND JUNIOR RECORD THAT WAS UNBELIEVABLE – A TRUE COMPETITOR. Anyways, me and Dooma were mates, and travelled a fair bit together, but this didn’t relax our competitive nature and when it came to a heat or a final or whatever it was, it was game on. Behind the Cover - Koa Smith by Alan Van Gysen This swell was a special one, and not just because it was one of those rare, large west swells that every five years lights up the point and produces the worlds best waves. This season marked my tenth year of visiting Namibia for Skeleton Bay. This swell showed the world and I that despite evidence to the contrary, sand spits of this freakish kind can and do - like many of us hope for ourselves, change literally overnight from being broken shadows of their former self to being made whole and perfect once more. TRACKS #33 COVER – JUNE 1973 I went to University through 1973, but in May of that year I was definitely on the NSW north coast when a really fine swell hit. I managed a personal best from one roll of film taken with the Nikonos underwater camera – two Tracks covers and three other shots that I thought were good. It’s probable that I headed straight to the Tracks darkroom when I got back to Sydney to process the film because one of the shots was on the June cover. I’m guessing that Albe Falzon was in a hurry because I doubt that I proofed the film before he chose frame 31… we used to do that, dry the negs sort-of and get them into the enlarger.
