hervey bay named world’s first whale heritage site

Queensland’s Hervey Bay has been accredited as the world’s first Whale Heritage Site by the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA). The historic decision was announced at the WCA’s international summit in early October and marks the culmination of four years’ work by the region’s council and tourism bodies. WCA’s founding partner Clive Martin said, “The award recognises the region’s responsible and sustainable whale watching practices and will highlight Hervey Bay as a leading example for other developing whale tourism sites around the world.” Whale watching is a major tourist drawcard for the Fraser Coast region, attracting about 60,000 visitors each year and injecting an estimated $11 million into the local economy. Exhibitor applications for the 60th annual Melbourne Boat Show are now open through the Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV). The upcoming show is set to be the biggest yet, with more than 21,500 visitors expected to pass through the doors over four days. Timeshare company Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific has acquired a majority freehold in a 105-room Airlie Beach resort on the Whitsunday Coast. The property will be rebranded as Club Wyndham Airlie Beach Whitsundays and will be available to Club Windham’s almost 60,000 timeshare owners. The resort overlooks the Whitsundays Passage and contains a restaurant, pool, gym, conference facilities and undercover parking. Competitors in the twelfth annual Clipper Race are arriving in Fremantle, WA, ahead of the gruelling fourth leg of this year’s race. On December 22, the 11 identical yachts will set out from Freemantle to skirt Australia’s rugged southern coast, dipping into the Tasman to pass the bottom end of Tasmania, before heading north along the east coast to the calmer waters of the Whitsundays. The race began on September 1 in London and will stretch over the course of 11 months, as the fleet completes a circumnavigation that’s divided into eight stages.
