get it right

For the second time in recent months, I have arrived at a manufacturer-planned testing event only to find gear to be tested incomplete or not set up to fulfil the brief. This last month I was invited up to Queensland to see the unveiling of new Evinrude E-TEC outboards. The timing was odd, with Trade-a-Boat already familiar with one of the releases, the new 2.7-litre 175hp E-TEC G2, as published last month but there was more – a new 60hp HO E-TEC. A generation-one engine that shares most of its specs with the 75hp E-TEC G1, it could be a good contender in what we all know is one of the strongest and most competitive categories, so I was genuinely interested in getting you the results of testing. To my…

high profile in brisbane, streaking up to gladstone

Profile Boats has appointed Brisbane Marine as its sole dealer for the south-east Queensland area. Brisbane Marine, in Clontarf, is a highly respected marine store and workshop that offers new boats, Mercury outboards and servicing. Profile Boats designs and manufactures aluminium fishing boats for recreational and commercial use from its base in Napier, New Zealand. With years of experience rigging Mercury Marine products, Profile Boats and Brisbane Marine both see the tie-up as an ideal match. The Brisbane Marine dealership has recently been expanded and along with Profile, visitors will be greeted by Streaker boats – the Navigator 6100 and Navigator 5700 take pride of place in the display area. “The Streaker brand is relatively new to Brisbane and we have a loyal dealer in Brisbane Marine. This is a fresh young dealership which…

innovation award for fusion

Fusion’s Stereoactive portable marine stereo has been awarded the Innovation Award in the Watersport Equipment category by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) at the recent Miami International Boat Show. The award, judged by Boating Writers International (BWI), recognises new consumer products that best meet the criteria of innovation, benefit to the industry or consumer, practicality, and cost-effectiveness. “We are proud of the passion and dedication our design and engineering team put into Stereoactive and are honoured to be recognised by the NMMA,” MD Chris Baird said. “We wanted to push the boundaries and help smaller boats easily and cost-effectively add quality entertainment. We designed an audio entertainment system engineered for the ocean but practical in any application.” It is the world’s first purpose-built portable marine stereo and has built-in Bluetooth audio streaming,…

sundance sponsors m2o

Sundance Marine is the naming rights sponsor for the 2018 Melbourne to Osaka (M2O) Yacht Race. Starting in Port Phillip in March 2018, this is the toughest challenge for offshore racers from Australia. The non-stop two-handed race is 5500nm or 10,000km – the equivalent of eight Sydney to Hobarts back-to-back. Starting in autumn, the route heads through Bass Strait, then up Australia’s east coast as the cherry blossoms bloom in Japan’s spring. Conducted every five years since 1987, the Organising Authority is a partnership between Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC), the Osaka Hokko Yacht Club (OHYC) and the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV). ORCV commodore Ray Shaw said: “Sundance Marine’s sponsorship and enthusiasm will ensure the event runs to its full potential. Support from ocean racers has been enormous, with all available entries…

predictwind, navionics on your plotter

B&G’s latest software updates add PredictWind weather to Zeus and Vulcan chartplotters. This enables PredictWind account holders to plan routes using its online wind, swell, rain, cloud, isobar and air temperature information on their plotter. Sailors can enter a route and see several suggested routes based on weather, time and day. For example, departure time can be seen for 24, 48, or 72 hours later to help select the best conditions. The update also installs Navionics Dock-to-Dock Autorouting, which creates detailed routes for navigating narrow channels. The Navionics algorithm factors in data from nautical charts and SonarChart Live to display the suggested route. Autorouting requires a Navionics card with an active chart updates subscription. SonarChart Live raises awareness of shallow areas and reveals uncharted bottom features, while Plotter Sync downloads the latest…
