bear’s battle

A truth in boat testing is fish never bite when we’re trying. It’s a weapons-grade superstition, with some of us refusing to have cameras aboard for fear they’ll keep the fish off the bite. So imagine my surprise – and joy – to hear that John ‘Bear’ Willis not only hooked a swordfish and landed it but that it is also a pending record! You can read about it on page 16. Has the curse been lifted? We’ll find out this month when I take a crew down to Apollo Bay to shoot some reviews and hopefully catch a tuna – maybe a record breaker. AUSTRALIA’S CUP 2021 Many of you reading this probably have only a cursory interest in what happened in Bermuda on 26 June. I blame the lack of…

big names for airlie

Several famous boats and sailors are ready for a showdown at Airlie Beach Race Week, 10-17 August, 2017. Andrew York is bringing his latest one-design keelboat from Sydney for the first time. ‘Yorky’, with America’s Cups, offshore and one-design triumphs, is also a decorated small-boat sailor with four national and two NSW keel boat titles, more recently in the REO 7.2 he developed. In a nod to its speed, the boat’s named Speedwagon. “It’s exceptionally quick off the breeze – we’ve sailed it at over 20kt countless times,” Yorky said. The Sydneysider aims to beat defending champion Returned, the Leech 750 owned by Graham Sherring. But 2015 champions Gary Smith and John Rae, with their Bethwaite 79er Vivace, are also expected to be major competition. The variety of boats in the Performance Racing division is…

service excellence recognised

Sydney City Marine has won the prestigious ACMG Commercial Marine Service Provider of the Year Award at the Australian International Marine Export Group awards. It recognises service provision in the Australian commercial marine sector. General manager Kym Fleet said: “This award is a direct reflection on the focus of the directors, management and staff to provide a higher level of service throughout the marine industry. “Whilst we are delighted to receive recognition in the commercial sector, our size allows us to separate large recreational craft. Presently we have a 92ft Predator, 78ft Fairline and 5800 Riviera in another section of the yard.” Call (02) 8572 7800, or visit www.sydneycitymarine.com.au.…

golden globe express

British yachtswoman Susie Goodall has secured DHL Express as her primary sponsor for the 2018 Golden Globe Race. Goodall, 27, is the youngest among a 30-strong entry list and one of only two females to take on the solo nonstop race. As well as providing logistics support, DHL is committing its vast international network to assist with any contingencies that may arise after the race has started. “Susie has an unbridled passion for what she does, a desire to conquer new frontiers, and recognises that diligent preparation is the key,” DHL Express CEO Ken Allen said. Goodall added: “I’m thrilled to welcome DHL on board. It’s reassuring knowing you’ve got a safe pair of hands behind you all the way!”…

cruise craft hits the roof

The CruiseCraft range has been expanded with the launch of the Outsider 595 HT, making four hardtop models. The Outsider 595 was available as a conventional soft top but the new hardtop means customers can choose the configuration suited to their needs. The hardtop is styled along the lines of the existing 685, 625 and 595 models, and is a fibreglass construction using a split-mould technique, with the roof and interior lining buffed to a mirror finish. The hardtop effectively extends your season – serious bluewater fishermen can head offshore regardless of stormy skies or blistering summer sun. At the aft end of the structure are stainless steel supports that double as hand-holds. The full-height toughened glass windscreen has sliding panels each side for airflow, while an electric wiper on the starboard screen is…

mbs success

Following four days showcasing the latest models, the 2017 Melbourne Boat Show concluded on a positive note. The show attracted 21,000 visitors and hosted product launches from Honda, Quintrex and Whittley. “We’re happy with how the show went,” said Paul Savage, co-director of Streaker Marine. “We were particularly busy on the weekend and did exceptionally well on sales.” “We worked really hard to be able to deliver for our exhibitors and the boat buying public,” said John Temple, CEO of BIAV. “For next year we are looking to capture more of the dollars being spent on other recreational activities.”…
