As we planned the content for this issue of Victoria, centered around vacation travels and collections that are often augmented with finds made while traveling, I thought about how my passion for collecting has changed in recent years. The prized blue-and-white china that I have treasured since my college days still commands my attention, but I recently discovered an enthusiasm for farmhouse antiques—especially items such as wooden measures and kitchen implements that are still functional. I am building a sizable group of vintage rolling pins, the kinds our grandmothers and mothers used to make from-scratch piecrusts and fluffy biscuits. Some have handles; some are simply long, straight rounds of hardwood, but all carry the marks of age. As I use these tools, I ponder whose hands last guided the back-and-forth movements…
