feeling hopeful!

Who doesn’t love spring? It’s hard not to feel a bit more hopeful when the blossom is out and daffodils are bobbing about in the breeze. This year it’s all even more precious because – fingers, toes and everything in-between crossed – we are inching to getting back some longed-for freedom after the last long year of lockdown. What better time is there to get outdoors – why not take some inspiration from this month’s health and wellness special? Turn to page 106 to find out more about e-bikes (really worth trying – and if I can manage them, anyone can), and on page 102, the real, scientific reasons why getting out and about is so good for you. On page 24, there are also some great strategies for looking after…

JANE FALLON is a multi-award-winning TV producer – behind shows such as This Life and Teachers – and a top 10 bestselling author. On page 27 she writes about the positives of ageing. Tell us about your teenage crush. When I was six I fell in love with Raymondo, a disembodied voice on The Jimmy Young Show on Radio 1. All he said was, ‘What’s the recipe today, Jim?’ I wrote to Jimmy asking if I could start a fan club for him but he declined – clearly, Raymondo didn’t exist. Bestselling author CATHY KELLY lives with her sons and three dogs in County Wicklow. With her new book Other Women out this month, she reveals to us how she writes on page 171. Tell us about your teenage crush. My teenage crush was a…

STRONG WOMEN I loved your feature celebrating the women taking a stand to protect our natural environment [March]. It’s wonderful to see how strong females can make a difference. In South Africa, there’s a saying: ‘You strike the woman, you strike the rock.’ The women you featured are indeed the bedrock of a new, more aware world. Mandy, by email HAPPY EVER AFTER It was lovely to read Fiona Gibson’s recipe for a happy marriage [March]. For 33 years, my husband and I have muddled along in contentment. He exasperates me by not putting things away, but we allow each other to be who we are. It doesn’t mean I don’t try to change him though. Even after all these years, I’m ever hopeful! Serena, by email SPECIAL DELIVERY I thoroughly enjoyed Sariah Jackson’s story about how…

‘my fantasy? a walking holiday’

Mel Giedroyc may just be one of the busiest women in showbiz. Comedian, presenter, actor, podcast host, and now author – she’s done it all. Even as we speak she has just wrapped two new TV shows (Unforgivable for entertainment channel Dave, and Good with Wood for Channel 4), and written her debut novel, The Best Things. It may be something to do with her upbringing. ‘My dad came to England in 1947 with absolutely nothing. He wasn’t interested in material things, like fancy houses and cars. Education was all he cared about for us.’ He must have been pleased then when his youngest daughter went on to study Italian at Cambridge, where she crossed paths with comedy duo partner, Sue Perkins. As well as having a busy career, Mel, 52, is…
