welcome...

Friendships are such a vital part of life. Who would be the person you’d instinctively call with important news… good or bad? Some people come into our lives late but make a huge impact, while with others we form connections that last a lifetime… in fact readers often tell us of friendships that have lasted 60 years or more. But like any relationship, friendships need to be nurtured. It’s so easy to drift into only getting into contact at birthdays and Christmas, or sending the odd message on social media. If you’re lucky enough to have a really good friend, give them a call today and let them know how much you appreciate them. If, on the other hand, you’re feeling a little lonely, make a new connection with our Find a…

STICKING AWAY FROM PLASTIC The tiny stickers used on apples, avocados and other fresh produce displaying the company name or barcode could become a thing of the past as supermarkets get rid of them in the fight to reduce plastic waste. Already 137.5 million of the stickers, which contain plastic, have been removed as staff are given cue cards with barcodes instead, while other suppliers have tattooed details onto the skin of the fruit and veg. Room for pudding? Scientists have come up with a reason for why, at the end of a main course and feeling stuffed, we can often still manage to squeeze in a dessert. Called ‘dessert stomach’ they say it happens because as we are eating our main meal we get bored quickly of eating the same thing which…

secrets of the cairngorms

From towering mountains to majestic rivers, tranquil forests to breathtaking lochs, there’s nowhere quite like the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Home to four out of five of Britain’s highest peaks, more than half of the surviving Caledonian forests and dozens of designated Ancient Woodland Sites, this special and unique landscape is a paradise for hundreds of species of animals and birds. And it’s also a treasured corner of the UK for walkers, hikers and nature lovers. One such fan is Andy Howard, who first discovered the wilderness as a little boy, and over the years made it his adventure playground where he developed his love of photography and wildlife. Spending many a shivery night camping out in the cold just to capture a snap of a bird unique to the area, or…

‘It’s never too late to learn to swim’ ✒ My wife Janet is a subscriber to Yours and because she reads every word, I only get a chance to read a week later – hence I’m always a fortnight behind! We met in 2009 (I was 56 and Janet, 54) and to her surprise I told her that I couldn’t swim and was terrified of the water. Fast forward two years to our honeymoon on a cruise ship. She would swim daily and I would sit and watch, wishing I had the courage to participate. When we returned she suggested teaching me to swim and within a couple of months I was swimming like a fish! It’s the best thing I’ve ever done and we now go swimming two or three times a…

Cashless chaos! ✒ Regarding your recent article on a cashless society, I only use cash for my shopping, or if I have to send away for anything, a cheque. Recently, waiting in a queue to pay at Morrisons, we were told every till had gone down and only customers with cash could pay for their goods. One assistant was pricing goods and the other totting up the bill with a calculator. Loaded trolleys were abandoned and new customers refused entry, thereby losing the store a lot of money. Imagine if the tills had been out of action for days and there was no cash in circulation to pay! Daphne Watts, Luton ✒ This is a photo of three best friends – me (Joyce, on the left), Ann in the middle and Mildred on the…
