welcome…

Courage comes in many forms; whether it’s highlighting injustice like Nurse Dawn Bilbrough (p18), or tackling crime like police dog Theo (p22). Then there’s another kind of bravery – those finding the strength to carry on in the face of adversity such as Kate Garraway (p12) and John Suchet (p28). Although it’s nothing like on the same scale, I do think we’re all having to summon a little extra courage at the moment; working out how to move from the relative safety of lockdown into what’s become our new normality. I know I am finding activities that seemed totally commonplace a few months ago now feel strange and daunting. the view from yours

Woodland warbles There’s nothing quite like the sounds of the forest to calm your soul, with its chirping birds and the wind rustling through the trees. That’s why a special project is calling for you to record one minute of audio in your local wood or forest to contribute to a ‘sound map’ of woodland. The idea is to create a sound map of the world’s woods and help us better connect with nature. For more information – including how to contribute a recording – visit timberfestival.org.uk/soundsoftheforest 13% of people who enjoy baking as a hobby have been inspired to start a bakery business in lockdown, new research by Mayku has unveiled Olivia still has her crown Good news for fans of The Crown! many royal returns!

She’s a gem. Truly one of the nicest and most hardworking of all the royals.” The words of a protection officer who knows Princess Anne well. As the dedicated royal, one of the hardest working members of the firm celebrates her 70th birthday on August 15, she has also received a new accolade. A recent study has voted her the most charitable royal; unsurprising given she’s involved in as many as 300 charities and organisations across the Commonwealth as well as helping to set up the Carers’ Trust and being president of Save the Children for more than 50 years. While she often flies under the royal radar, Anne has always been admired for her straight-talking, no-nonsense approach, preferring to just quietly get the job done. Speaking recently in an interview…

His headteacher insisted that every child maintained a holiday scrapbook. Initially, I thought it would be a chore but it grew to be a pleasure. We filled them with relevant poems, tickets, leaflets, mementos and beach and nature walk ‘finds’. On wet days, drawings, postcards and photos were included. Now he’s grown-up, I look back on those early holidays with fondness and…

Chick cheer Going out for our daily exercise we spotted these beautiful geese protecting their babies. It was such a tranquil scene and it really lifted our spirits. During the pandemic my daughter has been doing my shopping so I ensure only healthy foods are listed – the only way to beat temptation! And with no need for transport I have been walking miles every day in the fresh air and gardening. So far I’m 35 pounds lighter. My friends won’t know me by the time we meet up!
