buyers too accepting of inadequate reliability

WALKING around the stands at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week, it struck me just what a golden age for car development this is. There were family cars, supercars, F1-inspired cars, electric cars, hybrid cars, cars in houses (!), autonomous cars and cars from parts of the world that seemed very foreign indeed when I started out in this business. It was a majestic display of the quite extraordinary pace of change in this most compelling of industries. All these diverse products have one thing in common, though. When I finally get the chance to drive – or be driven in – them, I want them to work. Flawlessly. There is nothing I find more frustrating than having a great car at your disposal and then encountering problems (as I discovered…

uncertain future for up! as it fails to pay its way

VW is planning a revamp of its up! city car that could see its line-up reduced to a single pure-electric variant in Europe. The up!, which is built alongside its sister vehicles, the SEAT Mii and Skoda Citigo (driven on Page 36), is said to have fallen short of VW’s profit targets. Now VW brand boss Herbert Diess has admitted that the tight margins and potential costs of making the cars even more efficient could rule their petrol-powered versions out of Europe. “In some regions, such as Brazil [whereproduction is localised], cars like the up! are working very well,” Diess said.“Sources suggest that VW might choose to abandon conventionally powered city cars in Europe”OFFICIALNext up! could be EV only in Europe as current car has missed profit targets“But there comes a…

VW boss Herbert Diess confirmed to Auto Express last week at the Frankfurt show that the hatchback would be joined by not one but two sizes of SUV. “We already have the Tiguan and Tiguan XL,” he said,…
