I SPENT THIS MORNING AT THE North American International Auto Show, known unofficially as the Detroit auto show. I’ve been to a lot of these, in New York, LA, Paris, Frankfurt and Detroit. They all feel about the same to me at this point. I see the same people, mostly the same cars, the same displays, the same coffee bars a few times a year. Thankfully, the people are mostly cool, and there’s usually a car or two worth checking out. As far as jobs go, you could do a lot worse than walking the floor at a car show. It’s ironic to look at the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo clipping an apex on our cover—the company founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini, purposefully eschewed racing in his cars, seeing it as a waste of money. But time passes, and things change. Now under the ownership and guidance of Volkswagen AG, which bought the Italian exotic automaker in the late ’90s, Lamborghini has multiple factory-supported racing efforts. Rather than simply watch the Sant’Agata-built race car hit the circuit, Robin Warner strapped himself tightly into the carbon-fiber bucket seat and lapped the Vallelunga Circuit, a 2.5-mile loop just outside of the Rome metropolitan area. We don’t get a lot of snow in Reno. My house, at 4,900 feet in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada, might see a foot twice a year. We do get a lot of Californians, and they mostly don’t see snow at all. That state’s Central Valley, 90 minutes from my door, hasn’t been cloaked in white since the invention of water. Between there and home lies 7,056-foot Donner Pass, where a wagon train of early settlers famously bogged down. Today they can stroll to their choice of fast-food places and Asian noodle emporiums, but in 1847, they were forced to eat their livestock, their shoes and, eventually, each other. SQUIRT A BUNCH OF PAINT onto a spin-art machine, and what do you get? Well, depends on the colors and technique. One favorable outcome of such techno-cultural mixing is Kawasaki’s Z900RS Cafe. Based on the current Z900 “naked bike” (a bare-bones performance street bike), the Z900RS Cafe is, in part, a sort of assemblage of retro cues. It picks up café racer styling touches originating during the 1960s mods and rockers era of British motorcycling, blended together with design touches from Kawasaki’s early years in U.S. superbike racing—the bikini fairing, cutdown seat and 4-into-1 exhaust channel early superbike racers; the tail section channels Kawasaki’s 1973 Z1.
