man, jeeps are good

THIS MORNING, I WALKED through the 104-year-old bathroom that flooded yesterday, down the stairs through the kitchen where the water ended up and out to a brand-new press-fleet car—which I started and parked at the other end of the driveway. In the garage, next to the 911 that hasn’t moved under its own power in years, in front of the motorcycle I’m forbidden from riding and a few yards from the Power Wheels Jeep that’s … also disassembled, I found the 1948 Willys CJ2A that’s been utterly faithful, reliable and forgiving of my neglect since I brought it home to Detroit six years ago. That’s not to say there’s nothing wrong with it—there’s plenty. I have a mental catalog of stuff I could fix, but it’s never really been apart, and…

about the cover

Two mighty Jeep Gladiators battle in the windswept desert highlands of Southern California—one an ancient, battle-scarred survivor from the days before crumple zones and torsional rigidity, the other a modern technological tour de force … and only one will survive. OK, they both survived, and it was fun! Autoweek contributor Ben Stewart owns a 1964 model, and West Coast Editor Mark Vaughn absconded with a brand-new edition straight from the press launch in Sacramento, California. They met, along with photographer Andrew Trahan, at the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area in the mountains that border SoCal. The winner? Anyone who goes four-wheelin’! Check out our adventure starting on page 14.…

hairy cars, additives and absurd ads

Q: Do women prefer guys who drive hairy cars or cute cars? Is there one car that can impress guys and attract women? I’m thinking that the Jaguar E-Type is probably one of them. JAY: OK, if you’re buying a car because you think you’ll attract women, you’ll never attract any women. You’re trying too hard. Think about it this way: A guy goes to the beach. He’s walking around and can’t meet any girls. His friend says, “Here’s what you do. Take a potato, put it in your bathing suit. Believe me, women will see it and go crazy.” “Maybe I’ll try that.” He tries it. He walks around and nothing, nothing happens. He tells his friend, “Hey, you know, I put that potato in my bathing suit. I walked around. Women were running…

revved up

DO-IT-YOURSELF ISSUE, COVER, APRIL 22 Your cover illustrates a lack of organization and a total absence of care. I’ve worked on cars my entire life, and even when I worked for five days straight, building a race car from nothing in a week’s time, none of my tools looked that neglected. The right tool for the job always makes the job easier; taking care of them shows your skill and care you will put into your work. —RANDY BARATKA, BMW MASTERTECH, WALESKA, GEORGIA Editor’s Note: Some of our editors agree. Others say “relax.” “UNFINISHED BUSINESS,” COMPETITION PRESS, STEVEN COLE SMITH, APRIL 8 It was probably in 1970 when I was pumping gas at a Phillips 66 gas station on I-94, and Don Garlits drove up in his team truck. I was stunned and decided to…
