I hope you are all enjoying the pleasant spring months, and that you are not living in those areas of the country that have been recently ravaged by storms and tornadoes, some of which were truly remarkable to behold. That said, this month I am going to stay a bit closer to home, and take you to Hummelstown, Pa., a small borough 9 miles east of Harrisburg and the town just west of the popular tourist destination, Hershey, Pa., the Chocolate Town. Hummelstown, Pa., is located off U.S. Route 422 in Dauphin County, midway between Harrisburg and Hershey. The currently population is around 4,600. Derek Higgins already appears to have made what will be the U.S. small-size variety discovery of 2022. He reeled in the first reported $1 Series of 1935A late-finished back plate 470 from the JC serial number block; namely, J97077064C-J4115-470. The note arrived on Feb.19, his 32nd birthday—quite the memorable present! Late-finished 470 $1s rank as the rarest of the late-finished small size varieties with only a handful reported. All the other reported specimens are from the KC block. Notes bearing back plate serial number 470 were first recognized as odd by Leon Goodman who owned Elgee Coins in New York City and was the Goodman of the Goodman-Schwartz-O’Donnell Standard Handbook of Modern U.S. Paper Money published in 1968. Adam Stroup (Atlanta note) and Jacob Emmons (Fairfield note) submitted scans of these type 1 Series of 1929 $20 replacement notes. Both are well-made examples in that the serial numbers are centered properly, although they clearly exhibit a rubber-stamped appearance characteristic of replacements. However, the lead-pipe giveaway that both are replacements are the C-prefix letters in the serial numbers. Notice that the Cs have a round appearance rather than the conventional Cs with dented-in right sides as found on all other notes of that vintage, regardless of class. See the May 2020 BNR. Hot Market Trends in World Currency The first day of the Netherlands auction started off with an amazing group of Angola notes, 29 high priced lots containing 5 number 1 notes. These Angola notes alone sold for about $100,000, a very smart investment! I was especially interested in the Canadian notes that included a blue $5 train note of 1912 graded at PMG 58 sold for $4,320, and a specimen of the same note brought $10,800 in PMG63. The Canadian Battleship note of 1913, HMS Bellerophon of the Royal Bank of Canada sold for $4560 in PMG 58. This ship fired 62 rounds at the Battle of Jutland in WWI. World Banknote Auctions’ Sale 26 is expecting good results. The highlight of the auction are two notes from Qatar and Dubai, both are seldom offered for sale. The first is a 1966 Extremely Fine 25 riyals. This key note issued in Dubai in 1966 is the product of a currency alliance between Dubai and Qatar. The series, which consisted of a 1 Riyal, 5 Riyals, 10 Riyals, 25 Riyals, 50 Riyals and 100 Riyals were printed by the British firm of Bradbury & Wilkinson. All denominations had the same design, but the colors are different, and the sizes increase with each denomination. The 25 riyals is the lowest issued in the series.
