This month I think we will visit some small towns further afield from the many East Coast towns we have examined over the past few months. Accordingly, we will visit a variety of national banks in east-central Colorado: Julesburg, Limon and Hugo. I hope you enjoy. Julesburg, our first town, is the seat of remote Sedgwick County, located in the far northeastern corner of the state, just west of the Nebraska border and easily accessed via Interstate Highways 76 and 80. Purpose Bankers often incorporated in their titles descriptors for things that they wished their business to be identified with such as geographic features or landmarks, industries, professional trades, etc. Similarly, town names often carry or incorporate a defining feature of the community. It is natural that some bank and town names honored institutions of higher learning. There were nine national bank titles in the country where the bank or town name incorporated the word college or university and that wording appeared on their notes. It is the purpose of this article to present a pictorial essay consisting of one note or proof from each of these issuers along with pertinent tidbits that may be of interest. The ANA auction in late August showed paper currency up in price with very few notes failing to meet catalog prices, and then only falling short in minor ways. $500 and $1,000 FRN Small Size continue showing strength. A 1928 $500 St. Louis FRN realized $18,600 in a 66 grade, and $1,000 FRN’s really took off with a 1928 Cleveland note bringing $10,800 in a 64 grade. A Philadelphia $1,000 FRN brought $9,300 in 63 and a Chicago 1934A $1,000 reaching $10,200 in 64. The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be found on coins and currency across the world. Since the start of her reign in 1952, there have been numerous different designs to honor her. It would take considerable time to discuss every design from across the world, so we will focus on the issues found within England. Queen Elizabeth II was the first monarch to be featured on bank notes issued by the Bank of England. The Bank of England received permission to use her likeness in 1956, four years after the start of her legacy. Still, it would be several years until these new notes would be released. Pictured is the first XB-block note that I have been able to document from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing paper experiment carried out in 1940, along with another from the ZB block. Both were found by Derek Higgins, a careful observer and frequent contributor to the Small Size Variety Collectors Facebook forum. An article by Jamie Yakes and me in the March 2016 Bank Note Reporter revealed the existence of the paper experiment carried out in the XB, YB and ZB blocks of the $1 Series of 1935A silver certificates: specifically, X00000001B-X00720000B—control 75 percent linen cuttings and 25 percent cotton cuttings, Y00000001B-Y00720000B—50 percent linen cuttings and 50 percent cotton cuttings, and Z00000001B-Z00576000B—50 percent linen cuttings and 50 percent raw cotton fiber.
