when it rains …

We all know the idiom “when it rains, it pours.” Typically, though, this phrase is used in moments of overwhelming negativity. For Bassmaster Elite Series pro Chris Zaldain, who is pictured here fighting a fish in the rain, the phrase definitely shifts to the positive. While the skies were dropping bucketfuls of water, he was happily hooked up to a bucketmouth. If all goes well, he will be pouring poundage into his livewell. And if his next cast yields another hookup, he will be making hay while the sun shines (an idiom that doesn’t exactly match with the conditions, but applies nonetheless).…

the smell of support

I BOUGHT A candle. I think it was the bramble berry scent, whatever that is. I do know that it was the color of my favorite junebug worm, which sealed the deal. The purchase was inspired by my neighbor’s daughter, who was raising money for her high school band. I wanted to support her cause, and in doing so my man cave now smells like a Hallmark store. Not ideal. So, I was crazy excited to hear about a new program designed specifically for high school anglers, which includes fundraising opportunities, minus the candles. The new Berkley & Abu Garcia Student Angler Program was launched to help remedy a few painful aspects of being a high school or college angler. First, each registered team member will get special pricing on products.…

on the hook

Hometown: Auburn, Ala. Living in Auburn, you’re a die-hard Tigers fan, but there are a lot of Alabama guys on the Elite Series circuit on both sides of the Auburn/Alabama rivalry. Do you guys get into the rivalry at all? We talk smack back and forth, but it’s all in good fun and we have a good time with it. If you live in Alabama, you have to pick and choose a side. You go so far as to represent Auburn on your boat, with a tiger stripe pattern on the sides. Where did the idea for that wrap come from? Well, my wife wanted to do the tiger deal, and I wanted to do a sky blue camo pattern, so that’s where the idea came from. People thought we were crazy, though. Bass…

November 15 Use Less Stuff Day. You know that tacklebox with everything in it? Leave it at home and fish with just three baits. 22 Thanksgiving. Some families watch a parade and football; other families watch a parade of fish being caught. December 15 National Cat Herders Day. This actual holiday wasn’t created to honor tournament anglers, but it should have been. 21 Winter Solstice. After today, the nights get shorter and you’re 24 hours closer to those late evening, summer sunsets. 23 Festivus. What started as a Seinfeld skit has turned into an actual holiday for everyone. It’s also your last day to fish before Christmas arrives in earnest. 25 Christmas. The biggest holiday of the year for retail is also your best chance at getting free tackle.…

bass city, usa | clearlake, calif.

California’s Clear Lake ranks third in our 2018 list of the “100 Best Bass Lakes,” and the nearby city of Clearlake is home to about 15,000 people. The community was on the front lines of the Mendocino wildfire complex that ravaged areas north and west of the lake earlier this year. Still, the town itself remains tranquil, with a smattering of hotels and launch ramps. 1923: year that Clearlake’s first post office opened in the unincorporated community 480,000 age of Clear Lake in years (the oldest freshwater lake in North America) 17.52 weight in pounds of Clear Lake’s record largemouth 8 miles across at Clear Lake’s widest point 11,000 years that humans have occupied the shores of Clear Lake 1981: year that Clearlake gained a city charter…

A Kansas shootout resulted in one college bass angler booking a berth to the 2019 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. As storms rolled and lightning threatened in the distance, 21-year old Nick Ratliff of Campbellsville University edged out West Virginia University’s Nolan Minor to take home a win at the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops. The anglers wrapped up with the two biggest bags of the tournament; Ratliff with 13 pounds, 8 ounces and Minor with 13-4. The event was held on Milford Lake in Junction City, Kan. Ratliff earned a fully-rigged Toyota Tundra, a Nitro Z20 bass boat, a $7,500 stipend courtesy of Carhartt and a trip to Knoxville with a spot on fishing’s biggest stage March 15-17.…
