backstage pass

Calling out trends proves risky. Calling out several might prove insane. But I’m crazy about boats and have been watching nautical developments with an interested eye since outboards were smoky, diesel fuel was cheap, and loran-C was the cat’s meow. So, here are three things I predict boaters will see more of in 2019. The midsize cruising boat returns. Once a stalwart on waters both sweet and salty, new-model midsize cruisers ranging between 30 and 38 feet or so have become rarer than gull teeth in recent years, supplanted, to all appearances, by the proliferation of large, open dayboats. This year, you’ll be able to trade in Mom’s Mink for a new cruiser from the likes of Four Winns, Jeanneau, Regal and Rinker. Some of these will feature the choice of…

lance thomas, new york knicks

What was your first boat? When I first got into fishing, I started with a Sea Hunt 23, then moved up to a Yellowfin 36 before buying this Invincible 40 Catamaran that I love to run far offshore. How often do you fish? I have a condo in Venice (Louisiana) where I keep my boat. I fish there all summer during the offseason. I love fishing competitive tournaments all around the Southeast. What’s your favorite type of fishing? If it’s just for fun, grouper is my favorite fish to eat, but I also love chasing blue marlin. How’d you get so into fishing? I didn’t really fish growing up in New York. I started when I played for the New Orleans Hornets. Down there, fishing is a way of life. I started fishing for redfish and trout,…

cabo yachts 41

We were among the first members of the media to test the 35 Flybridge, Cabo Yachts’ first model. Early on, Cabo quality attained legendary status. So when the production of Cabos was suspended in 2014, it struck a sad chord. But now there’s reason to rejoice. North Carolina-based Hatteras/Cabo Yachts has announced the relaunch of the brand with the Cabo 41, slated to debut at the Miami International Boat Show (February 14-18, 2019). It will feature an express layout and come standard with twin 626 hp Volvo Penta D11 diesel inboards, with upgrades available to 670 and 725 hp twins, as well as Cummins QSM11 propulsion. Options will include a Seakeeper 6 gyrostabilization system and a custom tower. It will feature mezzanine seating in the cockpit. The interior will offer…

montara surf boss

Pontoons and wakesurf boats continue to rank among the hottest-selling boat types as we move into 2019. The new Montara Surf Boss is said to combine the best attributes of both types. Montara harnesses some yet-to-be fully revealed technology in the form of hull design (we suspect a transom pod of some sort), along with proprietary trim tabs and a whopping 5,000 pounds of ballast to create what is reported by surfers to be “a long, steep wave with plenty of power.” Powered by a Pleasurecraft Marine V-drive inboard of up to 550 hp, the Montara is also available with outboard power. Regardless of power size or type, all are said to sport luxury and comfort for runabout-style fun. The Montara Surf Boss is available in 21-, 23- and 25-foot versions. Prices range…
