like mother, like daughter

My late mother, shown here with eight-year-old me, was something special. She was elegance itself, stylishly dressed, perfectly manicured and never caught without a fresh coat of her signature carmine-red lipstick. Our home was as polished as she was, always ready for an impromptu fête. This apple didn’t fall as close to the tree as she would have liked, but my mom’s encouraging voice lives on in my mind, and I’m forever striving to emulate this immaculate being. Come May, my heartstrings get an extra tug, and I’m filled with happy nostalgia. So this issue of Canadian Living is dedicated to all things chic, just as my mother would have had it. “Style Inheritance” (page 30) highlights well-dressed moms and the daughters who take fashion cues from them, while the pages…

13 tricks, tips and ideas we love this month

1 Royal Flush There’s nothing precious about fuchsia; it’s a sexy, strong and eye-catching colour. If you want to layer on the edge, pair the hue with black for contrast or, to bring the shade into the corporate world (after all, it is a power colour), don a fuchsia blazer, khaki trousers and a simple tee. 2 STOCK TALK This herb infuser is a fresh way to flavour soups, stews and tea. Add your choice of herbs, place it in a pot, pan or cup and let the resulting taste speak for itself. Plus, the microwave- and dishwasher-safe infuser’s bright colour means no more fishing hard-to-see sprigs out of your stock. 3 Foodie Follow Share your CL creations with us on Instagram and tag us with #CLgetcooking, like @colleenemunro, who made our Chipotle Chicken With…

shade finder

For light skin Look for icy and pearlescent tones. “Shades that are too warm will look fake and stripy on pale skin,” says Colacci. For olive skin Choose golden highlighter with peach undertones. The combo is a flattering balance, “giving a sun-kissed glow,” says Colacci. For dark skin Rose gold and bronze shades are just right for illuminating deep complexions. “Avoid anything icy or too white—it can look grey and ashy,” says Colacci.…
