how cyril survived onslaught

ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa survived an attack on his leadership after he pledged to subject himself to the internal process of the integrity commission. This was after his opponents in the party placed him under pressure, saying he had no moral authority to speak out about ending corruption when he was hiding financial details regarding his #CR17 campaign in 2017. This weekend’s national executive committee (NEC) had a dramatic build-up after former president Jacob Zuma and his radical economic transformation brigade stepped up public attacks on Ramaphosa, criticising him for his letter last week in which he said the ANC was “accused number one” in corruption. In a pre-emptive strike during his political overview, Ramaphosa said he had requested to appear before the integrity commission to explain the allegations of vote buying…

senzo meyiwa murder hitman says it was kelly

A man who allegedly took part in killing former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has implicated singer Kelly Khumalo in the murder. But the singer, when contacted for comment yesterday, said: “Thank you for informing me. All the best with your story.” Police have received confessions from two men who said they were part of the plot to kill Meyiwa. In a confession made before a magistrate in June about the case, which has remained unresolved for almost six years, one of the alleged gunmen claimed the plot was hatched at a mall in Johannesburg, that a dispute arose over payment and that their families in KwaZulu-Natal had to call an urgent meeting to decide that the matter be kept secret. City Press understands that investigators have submitted the docket to prosecutors to obtain…

apology

City Press apologises to Eugene Mthethwa for not affording him an opportunity to respond prior to publication of the story “The R100m arts funding scandal” (City Press, July 14 2019). Mthethwa complained to the Press Council that he should not have been mentioned in the story because he did not receive the said funding from the department of arts and culture during the 2018/19 financial year. The Press Ombudsman was not satisfied that City Press exhausted its efforts to get hold of Mthethwa, and ordered that Mthethwa be afforded a right of reply. The other complaints were dismissed. ‘they shot him and dropped him off like trash’

The police shot his grandson dead, threw him into the back of a police van and then dropped him off at a hospital like a piece of trash. So said James Julies (69), the grandfather of the mentally handicapped Nathaniel “Lockie” Julies, who was allegedly murdered in cold blood by police in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg, this week. The shooting of the 16-year-old Nathaniel sparked national outrage and has also made international headlines. President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday expressed his sympathy with the family, and Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the family on the same day. On Thursday, furious residents protested outside Eldorado Park Police Station. Nathaniel was shot on Wednesday night while standing outside his home. He had left the house after dinner and a neighbour had bought him cookies from a…
