diamonds to dust

We don’t tend to find ourselves writing much about Mitsubishi in Classic Car Mart but this month has seen us getting more involved than usual with the triple-diamond marque. First came the chance to borrow the firm’s immaculately presented first-generation Shogun for this month’s twin test photo shoot and as you can read, it was an illuminating experience which illustrated just why Land Rover was sufficiently shaken to develop the Discovery in double-quick time. Unusually in the corporate world of automotive branding, I was chuffed to discover that the PR folk at the UK importer are genuine car enthusiasts just like us and were amused by my plans to leave our Honda CRX in the space vacated by the Shogun. Shortly after reluctantly handing back the keys though, I found myself writing a…

HAVE YOUR SAY The Covid-19 pandemic has already seen fundamental changes to the way many of us live our lives and will inevitably lead to difficult questions about the future being asked sooner rather than later. In this climate, the historic vehicle industry faces its toughest challenge yet to prove its worth, so the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) is urging enthusiasts to step forward and fight for the cause by taking part in its 2020 National Historic Vehicle Survey. The survey was launched last month and covered in our July 15 issue, but more still needs to be done. kelsey cancels 2020 events

While government guidelines now suggest that events can run from the beginning of October, the continued uncertainty has prompted Kelsey Media to regretfully cancel its planned events in 2020. These include VolksWorld on October 3-4 at Sandown Park; Trax and Japfest at Silverstone on October and the joint Ford Fair and Classic Ford Show at Silverstone on October 25. “It has been a truly challenging time for everyone, and we have continued to work with colleagues in the events industry, venues, commercial partners, clubs and customers to ascertain the best path forwards,” said the organisers. “Ultimately, we have concluded it was better to make a decisive call now than carry on with a high degree of uncertainty as to whether or not we could run our events in a safe and…

reborn cobra gets blown v8

Hot on the heels of the recently announced fully electric and 350bhp four-cylinder ‘Charter’ versions of its reborn Cobra, AC Cars has announced that a third new model will be available to British buyers soon – and this time it’s got a V8. Not just any V8, either. Buckinghamshire AC dealer Boss Motor Company will be the sole source of a new run of AC Cobra 378 Superblower MkIV models, originally conceived and launched by the current owners of AC Cars in 1998. That means a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 producing 580bhp and running through a six-speed gearbox. You also get beefy brakes, an LSD, multi-link suspension with coil-overs, anti-roll bars and suitably chunky 16-inch wheels, plus a black leather interior. The first production car is currently being built, and further customer cars…
